My name is Angel Akaninyene Thomas, but for the purpose of this platform, I go by the name Gemangel, and I am your new Hive friend.
I was born on the 7th of October. I am from Nigeria, and I came across this platform from one of my closet friends, @darahclem, who has become like a sister to me over the years. She has brought about my redefinition of family, and now to me, family isn’t just people related by blood, marriage, and adoption, but people who are also relatable. a person who can relate to your ups and downs. Someone you can be vulnerable with, and to me, that is family. One of the first things you must know about me is that I am a Christian, and to me, Christianity is a nationality, just like one would say he or she is a C
anadian to show they are from Canada. As a Christian, I also believe that I belong to Christ.
How did I come up with the name Gemangel? The name Gem is not my actual name, and it wasn't given to me by either of my parents. I am one person who has always believed that style means difference. Your style is what makes you different from others, what makes you outstanding and unique. So I made a conscious effort to be different—not just different, but outstanding in my own way. I knew that I wanted not just my presence to be different but also the mention of my name. I wanted something that spelled outstanding, one of a kind, usual, something that singled me out of thousands of people. The name Angel began to sound like a common name, so I thought I should add something that would make it stand out much more. I tried different options. I tried using the word rare before my name, "RARE-ANGEL,” and it didn’t sound as catchy as I wanted it to. I tried using "USUAL-ANGEL," but it didn’t really give me the kick I really wanted. Then I thought I should check online for synonyms of outstanding, and all the words didn’t seem to correlate with what I wanted until I came across a word, GEM, which in the Oxford dictionary meant "a precious or semi-precious stone, especially when cut and polished or engraved” or “an outstanding person or thing." It was exactly what I needed, and it had a good ring to it. I knew there was a problem, and then I came across the one. It was just like finding true love; you just knew when it was the one.
I’m a very family-oriented person. I love the comfort of my home. I love to be around family, especially my siblings; they are my second love after God. I have two younger sisters and an older brother. I am the first daughter and second child in my family. One of the people that keeps me going is my family. With the faith they put in me, whenever I think about them, I know I can be so much more. They are my biggest motivation.
If I were to describe myself in one word, I would say I am a realist because I believe the biggest mistake people make is not being real and true to themselves. I am also an optimistic person, a fashion lover, a writer, a passionate speaker, and an all-round lover of art. My favorite types of books are fictional books because I love the world of imagination and, basically, the idea of being able to create your own world. Growing up, there wasn’t really much entertaining going on, so I had to rely on my imagination to feel positive, and sometimes, when it became too much, I put it into writing, and that was how I discovered my passion for writing. So far, I haven’t really published any books, but I have a lot of pending books I’m currently working on.
