Hello friends of Arquitectura+Diseño! Today I want to show you a place that, despite having seen it many times in my walks around Havana, I had never visited before. It is a hostel called “Los Frailes”, located in the heart of the city, just half a block away from two of the main squares, San Francisco de Asis and Plaza Vieja. It is also close to the Convent and the sea, as well as many other places of interest.
¡Hola amigos de Arquitectura+Diseño! Hoy quiero mostrarles un lugar que, a pesar de haberlo visto muchas veces en mis paseos por La Habana, nunca antes había visitado. Se trata de un hostal llamado «Los Frailes», ubicado en el corazón de la ciudad, a solo media cuadra de dos de las plazas principales, San Francisco de Asís y Plaza Vieja. También está cerca del Convento y del mar, así como de muchos otros lugares de interés.
Every time I walk down Tenienterey Street and reach the intersection of Mercaderes and Oficios, I am surprised to see that copper sculpture in the shape of a friar in the middle of the sidewalk, right in front of the door of the hostel. It appears to be completely covered with the cassock, even the head, but it is actually hollow inside, and you can see his shoes peeking out of the bottom end of the cassock.
Cada vez que camino por la calle Tenienterey y llego al cruce de Mercaderes y Oficios, me sorprende ver esa escultura de cobre con forma de fraile en medio de la acera, justo delante de la puerta del hostal. Parece estar completamente cubierto con la sotana, incluyendo la cabeza, pero en realidad está hueco por dentro, y se pueden ver sus zapatos asomando por el extremo inferior de la sotana.
That day, I was on my way to the sea, but I decided to make a stop since I had time and entered the Hostal. It has three floors and its facade combines two shades of yellow. The doors on the second floor are mahogany and wide, all of them are long and reach the floor, the rest of the floors are green, and the lintel has beautiful stained glass windows. The balconies have the typical iron railings of colonial buildings.
Ese día, iba de camino al mar, pero decidí hacer una parada ya que tenía tiempo y entré en el Hostal. Tiene tres plantas y su fachada combina dos tonos de amarillo. Las puertas del primer piso son de caoba y amplias, todas son largas que llegan hasta el suelo, las del resto de los pisos son verdes, y el dintel con unos preciosos vitrales de colores. Los balcones tienen las típicas barandillas de hierro de los edificios coloniales.
The lobby is beautiful and everything has a similar tonality. I love the orange color scheme and the earth tone of the wood, all decorated with beautiful artwork and lamps alluding to religious life. The furnishings tend to be fairly simple, but make a nice combination with the surroundings.
El lobby es precioso y todo tiene una tonalidad similar. Me encanta la combinación de colores naranja y el tono tierra de la madera, todo ello decorado con bellas obras de arte y lámparas alusivas a la vida religiosa. El mobiliario tiende a ser bastante sencillo, pero hace una bonita combinación con el entorno.
In a corner of the lobby there is also another sculpture of a friar, made of copper, sitting on a piece of furniture similar to the seats in religious centers. The ceilings are made of wood, as in a typical colonial house, and the lamps, which I love, have bulbs that simulate candles.
En una esquina del lobby, también hay otra escultura de un fraile, de cobre, sentado en un mueble similar a los asientos de los centros religiosos. Los techos son de madera, como en una típica casa colonial, y las lámparas, que me encantan, tienen bombillas que simulan velas.
The door leading to the upper floor has religious ornamental elements that give it great beauty, and at the back there is a small bar that offers a variety of liquors and the back of the bar is decorated with religious figures.
La puerta que conduce al piso superior tiene elementos ornamentales religiosos que le aportan gran belleza, y al fondo se encuentra un pequeño bar que ofrece una variedad de licores y la parte posterior del bar esta decorada con figuras religiosas.
The employees told me that every Friday they perform a ritual in which all the hotel staff dress up in religious attire. At 6 pm, guests are invited to enjoy a glass of mass wine, while smelling incense in different areas and listening to a soft melody of Ave Maria.
Los empleados me contaron que cada viernes realizan un ritual en el que todo el personal del hotel se viste con atuendos religiosos. A las 6 pm, invitan a los huéspedes a disfrutar de una copa de vino de misa, mientras se percibe el olor a incienso en diferentes áreas y se escucha en suave melodía el Ave María.
The hostel is small and familiar, it has only 22 rooms, I was not allowed to go upstairs, because it is important to respect the privacy and silence that reigns in the place, but I could walk through the common areas and admire its colonial design. I was told that the rooms are spacious, air-conditioned and have a cozy but simple decoration.
El Hostal es pequeño y familiar, sólo tiene 22 habitaciones, no me permitieron subir, porque es importante respetar la intimidad y el silencio que reina en el lugar, pero pude pasear por las zonas comunes y admirar su diseño colonial. Me contaron que las habitaciones son amplias, estan climatizadas y una decoración acogedora, aunque sencilla.
One of the hotel's main attractions is its interior garden, which is cool and peaceful, ideal for relaxing from the hustle and bustle that surrounds the place. Despite being in a busy area, upon arrival you will experience a haven of silence.
Uno de los principales atractivos del hotel es su jardín interior, de aspecto fresco y tranquilo, ideal para relajarse del ajetreo que rodea el lugar. A pesar de estar en una zona muy transitada, al llegar se experimenta un remanso de silencio.
I hope you liked this magical place, it is quiet and ideal to spend a few days in the heart of Havana, which is quite hot and noisy but once you pass the threshold of this hostel everything returns to tranquility. Greetings to all and I wish you a good start of the week, see you soon!
