Greetings, dear and fruitful readers of world literature. It is a pleasure and a pleasure to meet you at the C/ Hive Book Club. I look through my old library at the texts I have filed on the shelves. I find a compact of several short literary pieces by the famous and well-remembered Leo Tolstoy. I decide to read this piece. Better expressed is to reread. It's been several years since I read it. So, I open the pages of The Death of Ivan Ilyich. The Death of Ivan Ilyich by Leo Tolstoy was first published in 1886. These are what I need to know as I enter the drama of the play "The Death of Ivan Ilyich". The play does not only focus on Ivan Ilyich, it also deals with the lives and personalities of the characters around him. The characters created possess delicate behavioural disorders, in the late 1800s; that is, I merely consider these characters, as I lead them through 2024, to be current, real and believable.

Mejor expresado es releer. Hace varios años que lo leí. Entonces, abro las páginas de la muerte Iván Ilich. La muerte de Iván Ilich de León Tolstói fue publicada por primera vez en 1886. Estos son los que preciso al adentrarme en el drama de la obra "La muerte de Iván Ilich". La obra no se centra únicamente en Iván Ilich, también aborda las vidas y personalidades de los personajes que lo rodean. Pyotr Ivanovich Shcheglovitov: a friend and colleague of Ivan Ilyich. He is a man of opportunism. He takes advantage of Ivan Ilyich's illness to rise in the bureaucracy.
Gerasim. Ivan Ilyich's servant. He is a common and compassionate man. He is the only character who cares for Ivan Ilyich to help him in his misfortune.
Lisa. Ivan Ilyich's youngest daughter. She the one who brings comfort to her father in his last days.

In this play, Ivan Ilich Golovin, a high-ranking character in the social structure, is a judge who enjoys a comfortable and banal life. His personal life develops along the lines of his career, in the strata of the courts and his social position. What's more, everything is turned upside down when he falls ill and receives a drastic and final diagnosis. As I read further into the book, Ivan Ilyich's illness progresses, he is confronted with the unquestionable reality of his death. This personal situation and condition leads him to reflect on and internalise the existence of his being. He radically questions this meaning intrinsically. He realises that his life is an empty jar of genuine values and that he has been living a dissimulation. The disease confronts him with the falsity of the people around him, who are only interested in him for the sake of fatuous convenience. Even his family does not support him. They do not approach him to help with the physiological needs of the dying patient. He is a human wreck. In his last days, Ivan Ilyich finds consolation in the service of a peasant named Gerasim. His dignified and compassionate attitude helps him to accept death with serenity.

My eyes and mind are immersed in this literary piece. It has an extensive suspense for the personality of this man who approaches with the resemblance, and the crude reality of the life of any man or woman of the present time. There is no difference of sex, nor of social position. These pages are the reading of any of us. I see Tolstoy's intention; his main aim was to explore the emotions and reflections of a man who in his last days is facing death. So, Ivan Illich's illness is symbolic of the inevitable reality of death that must be faced at some point. In my soul, I am confronted with an unexpected and unusual truth that shakes me because here I get the theme of the confrontation of life and death. The meaning of my existence and the social hypocrisy I live with on a daily basis. Tolstoy, in his spirit, describes through these letters the deep criticism of the society of his time. I compare it with today's society. Ivan Ilyich Golovin is a reified man. He is an object, a superficial thing dressed up in appearances.

En mi alma, me encuentro con una inesperada e insólita verdad que me estremece porque aquí consigo el tema de la confrontación de la vida y la muerte. El significado de mi existencia y la hipocresía social con la que vivo cotidianamente. Tolstói, describe con su espíritu, a través de estas letras, la profunda critica a la sociedad de su época. Yo la comparo con la sociedad actual. Iván Ilich Golovin, es un hombre cosificado. Es un objeto, una cosa superficial vestido de apariencias.

The Death of Ivan Ilyich is a play that shakes my soul. I am in a process of analysis and discernment of how my emotions work and to what degree my emotions and fear of death are at work. Por último, capturo en mi malla espiritual la inequívoca universalidad del mensaje. Su ambientación es la turbulenta Rusia del siglo XIX, la obra de Tolstói imprime temas universales considerables como la vida, la muerte, y el significado de la existencia del ser. Sus ideas son trascendentales para la humanidad, como en la Rusia zarista. Es una temática que está encarnada en todas las naciones y familias, con sus conflictos emocionales, los miedos, los antivalores; hoy y en todas las épocas.
I am surprised by Ivan's permanent conflict with his wife. I also like the relationship he makes when he compares the doctor's visits to his condition as a patient, with his character as a judge in court. This play raises awareness of family relationships, how a marital relationship is concretised to develop into an algorithm of irrational inconsistencies where the family is the centre of discord and continuous disintegration. The marital relationship must be built on the foundations of the full well-being, love, peace, effectiveness and spiritual dignity of each of its members.
Me sorprende el conflicto permanente de Iván con su esposa. También, me gusta la relación que hace al comparar las visitas del médico a su condición de paciente, con su carácter de juez en los tribunales. Esta obra despierta la conciencia de las relaciones familiares, como se concreta una relación matrimonial para desarrollarse en un algoritmo de incoherencias irracionales donde la familia es el centro de discordia y disgregación continua. Se debe concertar la relación matrimonial con las bases del bienestar pleno, el amor, la paz, la eficacia y la dignidad espiritual de cada uno de sus miembros.
