To describe Ghana, my country, I would say it's a lively country in West Africa. The country isn't only rich in natural resources but also has a rich culture. We show these cultures show in many traditional dances done across the country. There many tribes in Ghana and each one has their own cultural dance. Each dance has its own rhythm, moves, and history behind them.
One of the most famous dances is the Adowa, done by the Ashanti people. I personally call it the "pride dance" because we dance it with pride. I'm from this tribe and whenever you see us dance it's about showing how proud we are about our culture. We dance to show maturity, wisdom and respect for tradition.
We do the Adowa dance with graceful arm movements and a controlled way of standing. Often performed at festivals and special events, it's a beautiful display of power and grace under control. The dance is accompanied with the Kete drums. You would definitely give in the dance when you hear the sound of the beating drums.
We also have Kpanlogo, which is a dance done energetically. It's a dance for the Ga people. This fun dance has strong footwork and expressive body movements, often with loud drumming. Kpanlogo is a dance for everyone to join in, creating a happy atmosphere.
Then we have the energetic Agbadza dance performed by the Ewe tribe. The Agbadza is a vibrant expression of Ewe culture in Ghana. It evolved from a warriors' dance called Atrikpui, it has become a popular recreational activity. It is performed during the Hogbetsotso Festival. You will see dancers moving in sync to drumming and singing, celebrating community and ancestral heritage.
There are several tribes with their dance and these are just a few examples, Ghana has many other amazing dances like the Apatampa dance. The Apatampa is a dance by the Fante people. It involves a complex footwork and with dancers moving together.
These dances are more are always filled with so much fun and they are beautiful to watch. They are a vital part of Ghanaian culture. They tell stories about our past. Members of every tribe are expected to pass down history and traditions to their children. One of the ways they achieve these is through dance.
When you see a tribe performing their dance it's always about celebrations of culture, something that binds people together in shared joy and unity. Traditions goes on and even if people travel out of the country they still extend their culture beyond the country's borders.
Culture is a way of life and we live it irrespective our location. Today we have lots of Ghanaians in the diaspora that keep showing these dances during funeral, festival, marriages and other occasions.
