A celebration to mark our progress 祭りみたいな一日

Yesterday was magical!

Our monthly flea market was held and I helped my partner take care of a booth to sell her hats and yarn. Her hats are becoming more and more popular in our neighborhood, as she starts to develop her own style more and think of herself as an artist and an artisan instead of just a hobbyist.

It felt as if our role in this neighborhood is finally becoming clearer. There are multiple power couples and a few power individuals in this town who bring their own flavor and add an irriplacable element. Some of them run their own shops. Some of them make special art or are great at gathering people for events. Some are a combination of things.

We are finally at a level of our own artistic and personal development where we feel we’ve become irreplacable like all the other power couples and individuals in town.

While our town is very welcoming to people who look atypical, the punks, the hippies, the hip hop scene, skater, tatooes and all that, I think it can be intimidating to people who aren’t involved in these kind of subcultures, especially people who might consider themselves introverted.

I think we make the town much more welcoming for these people if they are curious and value real human interaction and relationships over commodification. I think we do a good job at welcoming everyone except those who are thinking about self gain without regard for people around them or the harmony of the community. We do not make people feel bad about being “normies” and give them a place to explore their own individuality without pressure of fitting in with other weirdos.

We challenge the challengers of convention but in a soft and gentle way that is more fun than confrontational.

This was represented by our physical location in the flea market. A few vendors didn’t come because of the cloudy weather and they all happened to be surrounding us in the center section of the market. So we were right in the middle and completely isolated from the rest of the market.

But becasue a bunch of friends came from other stations and some of our friends from town stopped by to chat, we created a fun little island in the center of a market on the left and right. It was beautiful.

This is exactly what I want to be in the neighborhood. A refuge for those who just want to connect and aren’t exclusive about what hobbies the people they connect with have. So a full time artist and a full time mother can connect even if they have different hobbies and interest because we have invited them to come play together in a way that is welcoming and interesting to both of them.

We invited a few friends from other parts of the city and we excepted that maybe one or two would come but all 6 came! Friends from Japan, Canada, Ukraine and China and so we jumped around between our three common languages, and tried to help our friends communicate with each other and our neighbors.

We sold about $200 worth of goods which is not bad considering the space cost $7 at sign up.

We found some people at the end of the street selling similar products to my partner and sometimes people can get competitive and avoid making friends with each other but we felt a natural connection to them. I also met some artists who live in the country and come to Tokyo just to present their art and organic food.

I was whisked away for 20 minutes into a neighbors very very strange room, decorated to the brim with religious figures and symbols from various religions, and we chatted for a few minutes before I went to help clean up.

We ended the night in a small pub, and ordered non- alcoholic drinks just to chat with the owners. Then the two of us went to the park to discuss how we want to move forward with our work and artistic projects and how yo build upon what we already have. It was an amazing discussion where we both helped wach other come up with ideas.

Now I feel energized to have an awesome summer. It feels as if yesterday was the mark of a new season and a new mode for us!

昨日は魔法のような一日でした！

私たちの月一回のフリーマーケットが開催され、私はパートナーのブースで帽子と糸を売る手伝いをしました。彼女の帽子は、彼女が自分のスタイルを確立し、趣味からアーティスト兼職人として自己認識を変え始めるにつれて、私たちの近所でますます人気が出ています。

この地域での私たちの役割がようやくはっきりしてきたように感じます。この町には、独自の風味を加え、かけがえのない要素をもたらす複数のパワーカップルや数人のパワー個人がいます。彼らの中には自分の店を経営する人もいれば、特別なアートを作る人やイベントを組織するのが得意な人もいます。中にはその両方を兼ね備えた人もいます。

私たちも、町の他のパワーカップルや個人と同様に、芸術的および個人的な発展のレベルに達し、自分たちがかけがえのない存在になったと感じています。

私たちの町は、典型的でない外見の人々、パンク、ヒッピー、ヒップホップシーン、スケーター、タトゥーなどにとても歓迎的ですが、これらのサブカルチャーに関わっていない人々、特に内向的な性格の人々には威圧的に感じられるかもしれません。

私たちは、本物の人間関係を大切にし、商品化よりも人間関係を価値あるものと考える好奇心旺盛な人々にとって、町をより歓迎的にすると思います。私たちは、周囲の人々やコミュニティの調和を考えずに自己利益を追求する人々を除いて、誰もが歓迎されるよう努めています。私たちは「普通の人々」を悪く思わせることなく、他の変わり者たちと合う圧力なしに、自己の個性を探求する場を提供しています。

私たちは伝統に挑戦する者たちに挑戦しますが、それは対決よりも楽しいやり方で、穏やかで優しい方法です。

これは、フリーマーケットでの私たちの物理的な位置によって表されました。曇り空のために何人かの出店者が来なかったため、私たちは市場の中央部で完全に孤立していました。

しかし、他の駅から来たたくさんの友人や町の友人が立ち寄っておしゃべりをしたため、市場の中央に楽しい小さな島を作り出しました。それは美しかったです。

これはまさに私がこの地域でありたいと思っていることです。ただ繋がりたいと思う人々のための避難所で、繋がる相手の趣味にこだわりません。全時間アーティストと全時間の母親も、異なる趣味や興味があっても、双方にとって歓迎され興味深い方法で一緒に遊ぶよう招待したので繋がることができます。

私たちは都市の他の部分から数人の友人を招待し、一人か二人が来るかもしれないと思っていましたが、なんと6人全員が来ました！日本、カナダ、ウクライナ、中国からの友人たちで、私たちは共通の三つの言語を使いながら飛び回り、友人たちや近所の人々とのコミュニケーションを助けようとしました。

私たちは約200ドル分の商品を売りましたが、登録時にスペースの費用が7ドルだったことを考えると悪くありません。

通りの端でパートナーの商品と似たものを売っている人たちを見つけましたが、時には競争が激しくなり他人と友達になるのを避けることもありますが、私たちは彼らに自然な繋がりを感じました。また、田舎に住むアーティストたちに会い、彼らが東京に来て自分たちの芸術と有機食品を展示するためだけでなく、いくつかの交流もありました。

私は20分間、隣人の非常に奇妙な部屋に連れて行かれました。その部屋はさまざまな宗教の宗教的な像とシンボルでいっぱいで、数分間おしゃべりをした後、片付けの手伝いに行きました。

その夜は小さなパブで締めくくり、オーナーとおしゃべりするためにノンアルコール飲料を注文しました。その後、私たちは二人で公園に行き、私たちの仕事や芸術プロジェクトの進め方、そして既に持っているものをどのように発展させていくかについて話し合いました。それは素晴らしい議論で、互いにアイデアを出し合いました。

今、素晴らしい夏を過ごすためのエネルギーに満ち溢れています。昨日が新しいシーズンと新しいモードの始まりのように感じます！
