On a cultural level, it's merely impossible to count the number of nostalgic experiences I’ve collected from Dubai. In addition to other significant cities of the United Arab Emirates that accumulated over the years, they're simply too many.
This is because I’ve had the tremendous honor of being a Dubai resident for as long as I could remember to the point of considering her one of my second homes away from home. In other words, I've gladly invested a substantial portion of my lifetime in this world-class Middle Eastern metropolis. That's how deeply treasured this special place is to my heart.
Nevertheless, like every other major urban development around the world, I've always been fascinated about their humble beginnings. A city’s origin tickles my curiosity, inspiring me to explore more. Do you feel the same way?
And if there's one unforgettable spot nestled within Dubai that kept popping inside my head, it would be nowhere else but where it all began: Dubai Creek.
The Dubai Creek was this mega city’s most celebrated body of water. Despite looking like an ordinary gateway for sea vessels from the Persian (Arabian) Gulf by allowing access to the urban center’s interior, this prestigious channel embodied incredibly historic significance.
One obvious evidence was the presence of “Dhows”, also known as their traditional watercraft equipped with sails usually used by professional fishermen, cargo movers, or tourism companies. These sea vessels were common sights at the Dubai Creek and were typically docked at the harbor when not sailing.
I likewise enjoyed the absolute privilege of listening to popular stories about Dubai Creek’s interesting origins handed down from my local friends otherwise referred to as the Emaratis (UAE’s citizens), and other hospitable Arabs who were willing to share these generational narratives to me. These were some astounding facts:
The Dubai Creek was the original birthplace of the Al Maktoum empire, the present-day rulers of Dubai. Their ancestral family lineage sprouted from this basically modest fishing village.
Pearl-diving was the main economic driver during Dubai Creek’s ancient period. And this jewelry business was one profitable industry that boosted their thriving livelihoods.
Before Dubai even constructed their modern airports on desert developments, the Dubai Creek used to be their city’s first and primary aviation portal during the earlier part of the century. How? This famous water channel allowed and received an influx of state-of-the-art seaplanes from different countries to land on this aquatic environment.
Of all the above-mentioned tales, the last one was the most surprising indeed. I simply wasn't expecting it!
Moreover, if there was one mode of public transportation on the Dubai Creek that was my favorite ride, they would surely be the “Abras”, also recognized as their water taxis. These small sea vessels accommodated over a dozen commuters and transported people of all ages to either side of the waterway. These urban districts spreading along the creekside were known as Bur Dubai and Deira, two of the busiest, productive, as well as touristic communities of Dubai.
And last but not the least, the coastal edges of Dubai Creek were the preferred homes to lots of restaurants, tourist attractions, and commercial establishments selling all kinds of commodities like textiles, artifacts, artworks, jewelry and more. These creekside marketplaces were called “Souks” and were bustling neighborhoods of trading activities. By the way, don't forget to carry lots of cash, ready to buy these tempting wares and assorted merchandise.
Due to the random proliferation of these Souks at the coastal areas, I seldom got lost in the confusing labyrinth of stores. With several of these interlocking alleys, dead ends, and other spatial disorientations, it could be quite a nightmare especially for first-time visitors. Yet, through the available help of friendly locals, the urban navigation in these touristic places ended smoothly.
Once in a while, I also witnessed workers relaxing to cool off from the scorching heat of Dubai’s desert atmosphere. And since these urban locations also belonged to an Islamic nation, plenty of beautiful mosques were definitely encountered along the way.
