Hello adventurous friends and Drone lovers, today I bring you this small post where I visit the coastal route of Setubal and we will have the opportunity to film the main military forts that protected the coast for hundreds of years! some are from the age of discovery and others are more recent! I don't have the time to visit them all. Apart from these two, there is a third one that is the main one and which is at the highest point of the coast at 273 meters, the famous "ribas", enjoy the video and photos!🌍🛥️

About the Picheleiros village🌍/sobre la aldea Picheleiros🚩

I have already been to the village of Pichileiros several times, it is beautiful because it is in the middle of the mountain and in the background you can see the mountains! It is ideal for camping, riding bicycles or my favorite activity hiking, you have options such as staying in a hotel for 80 euros per night in the middle of nature, however the area also has history around here some military forts were built to protect the area coastal area of Setubal, and my intention with today's post is to visit the forts to learn about their history and see the surrounding landscapes! You can do the route on foot or by car. As I was with my wife, I did it from a car! It will take you approximately an hour.🧭🛥️

fort of "Santiago do Outão"🌍/fuerte de "Santiago do Outão"🚩

This is our second stop, we arrived in front of the "Santiago do Outão" fort which in my personal opinion is one of the best preserved in the country, I have never seen one so beautiful and cared for, I suppose it is also because it was converted into a sanatorium, however the A visit is worth it, visiting it is not easy because there are no roads, the only one that exists only has access to the sanatorium, so as a tourist it is difficult to access! However, from a distance you can do it! However, I saw on the map that there is a path that runs along the beach where you can go under the fort!🧭🚙

If you are curious, how far away you can see from the fort is a small peninsula called "Troja", the fort was built in 1572, we would be referring to the era when Portugal was a world power along with Spain, according to there is some evidence that before When the fort was built in the 13th century, there was already a structure in this position, making the fort older than is believed; This was during the reign of Joao I. Starting in 1572, to protect the front of Setubal, renovations were made to fortify the walls, since at that height there were many dangers of piracy!🚙🌍

More recently, in the 19th century, the fort was dismantled and transformed into a pressure, later in 1600 the lighthouse was also built, currently it is a sanatorium and let's say that it is not 100% a tourist place with easy access, thank goodness that with me drone I can show you this architectural marvel with gothic style!🌍🚩

Albarquel Fort🌍/fuerte de "Santiago do Outão"🚩

We located this fort here: (38° 30.667' N 8° 54.795' W) this one is easily accessible, it is on the beach and it is much more recent and modern, with the car or walking we can get the coordinates, this one here dates From the 17th century, it was part of the "blue stretch" defensive line, which is a set of 4 military forts whose function was to protect the coastal area of Setubal against an imminent invasion or against piracy!🚩🌅

built in the time of John VI🌍

Later, after the fort was decommissioned, some updates were made and it was used in the 19th century as a modern defense to protect the country along the maritime coast area. In 2004, it was thought to remodel it to create a hotel. Since then, it has belonged to the municipal chamber and it has been like this for more than 32 years! Nowadays it is like a small museum!🧭🌏👩‍🏫

Very cool overview. Always like seeing the old forts. I've been re-watching the series "Black Sails" for fun. Hard to believe that was not that long ago when they were actively being used and attacked.

Some of them were used against Napoleon's troops from the north of Lisbon.

Nice history around this place! These ancient forts are always cool to visit.
