Converse Sneakers and My Memory
My first pair of Converse sneakers was probably when I was 4-5. I had them in a few different colours, but I remember the navy ones the most vividly. My father bought them for me, and my brother also had a pair. They were 'Chuck Taylor All-Star High Top,' similar to the ones in this photo, which made them a bit challenging for young kids to put on, but I loved them anyway.
I wore those sneakers all through my elementary school years, but eventually, I stopped wearing them for a while. It wasn't until I started playing basketball that I returned to wearing Converse, though they weren't All-Stars.
In my late teens, I rediscovered the All-Star High Tops and developed a preference for the High Top style over the Low Top. I had them in classic black and white and cherished them for many years. I'm not sure why I was so drawn to them, but perhaps it was because of the fond memories associated with them from my childhood. Those sneakers accompanied me to countless interesting places, and their lightweight design made them easy to take along wherever I went. I didn't mind them getting dirty because they were easy to wash, and I was amazed by how durable they were. However, after many years, they finally reached the end of their lifespan. Additionally, they used to be reasonably priced, but nowadays, their cost has become pricey. Just before I moved to Canada a few years ago, I decided to donate my still-usable white Converse sneakers.
Upon arriving in Canada, I eagerly purchased a pair of Chuck Taylor All-Star High Tops in blue in the photo. However, to my surprise, I found myself feeling uncomfortable wearing them. With frequent rainy days, canvas-style sneakers like these weren't practical for the climate here. Furthermore, when I visited my mother in Japan two years ago, I felt uncomfortable wearing them. I opted for walking shoes with more supportive soles instead.
Moreover, I realized that my taste had evolved over the years. After decluttering my shoe collection, I found myself gravitating towards simpler colours like black, gray, beige, and brown. These colours are versatile and easy to match with any outfit. I've become more mindful of not wasting money on items that don't align with my current taste and style preferences. Simplifying my wardrobe has been liberating. I no longer feel the need to have multiple options "just in case." This shift in mindset has reduced my stress levels significantly.
Although I hesitated to part with my beloved Chuck Taylors for some time, I eventually decided to let them go. While I no longer wear them, I hope they'll find a new owner who will appreciate them as much as I did. I wonder when I became an old lady if I would wear Converse again!

コンバースと思い出
私のいちばん初めのコンバースのスニーカーとの出会いは４歳〜５歳の頃だったと思います。色違いをいくつかはきましたが、いちばん印象に残っている色は紺色です。父が買ってくれたもので、弟も何色かは忘れましたがはいていました。ちょうどこの写真に似たチャックテーラー・オールスターのハイカットでした。ハイカットの靴は子供がひとりではくにはけっこう難しいデザインでしたが、好きでした。
小学校の時も同じデザインのスニーカーをはき続けていましたが、そのうちはかなくなりました。バスケを始めたのきっかけにまたコンバースをまたはくことになりましたが、それはチャックテーラー・オールスターではありませんでした。
１０代後半で、またチャックテーラー・オールスターのハイカットをはくきっかけがやってきました。白と黒の両方を持っていて随分と長い間はきました。たまにローカットもはきましたが、やはり個人的にはハイカットが好きでした。なぜそんなに好きだったのかはわかりませんが、おそらく小さな頃のいい思い出があったからでしょうか。それをはいて色々なところに出かけた思い出があります。それから多少汚れても特に気にすることなくじゃぶじゃぶ洗えるのもいいですし、耐久性があって驚くほど長持ちします。しかし、長年はき続けるとさすがに寿命がやってきました。その頃は今と違って価格がかなり安価でした。数年前カナダに移住するときに、まだはけそうなコンバースは寄付してきました。
カナダに着いてから写真にあるチャックテーラー・オールスターのブルーが欲しくなり購入しました。ところが、不思議なことに、なんだかはき心地が悪く感じるようになったことに気がつきました。今住んでいる地域はよく雨が降るので、キャンバス地のスニーカーが天候にあまり適していないのも理由のひとつかも知れません。さらに、日本を２年前に訪れた時に持って行ったのですが、なんともはき心地が悪く感じました。底がしっかりしたウォーキングシューズをはいた方が良いと思いました。
それから、時が経つうちに自分の好みが変わったことにも気がつきました。靴の捨て活をしてからというもの、黒、グレー、ベージュや茶色などのシンプルな色を好む自分がいることに気がつきました。そういうシンプルな色は何にでも合わせやすいので楽です。
以前は色々な柄や色のものを好む傾向にあったので、念のためにいろいろなシチュエーションに合うような靴や服をたくさん持っていました。現在は、持っている物の量自体を減らしたので、「念のため」であれこれ持つことをやめました。そうすることでストレスのレベルにかなり変化があったと思います。
ところが、このチャックテーラーを処分するのにけっこう悩みました。もうあまりはかなくなってしまったので、誰かはいてくれる方がいたらいいなと思います。またいつの日か、おばあちゃんになったらコンバースをはくかも知れませんが…。

I also grew up with good old Chuck Taylors. I loved those things. My taste has also changes, and nowadays I prefer less flashy things. Plain sandals when I can or just black shoes with a soft and flexible sole so it's more like barefoot. So I don't want to wear Chuck Taylors anymore, but I do have great memories of them!
It's nice to hear your version of Chuck Taylor's story. I love them because they are simple and colourful. As you said, I understand that you prefer less flashy things year by year. Totally! We care about soft and flexible sole materials, just like barefoot. I can't believe that some athletes played basketball with Chuck Taylor... It must have been so hard to jump and run with them.
いろいろなところで、そうそう、わかりますわかります、と！私も小学生くらいからコンバースが好きで大学生くらいまで必ず持っていました。数年前に久しぶりに買って履いてみたら、靴底が重い感じがして、その子をはききってからは新しいものは買い足さず、ランニング用のスニーカーを買いました。軽さにびっくりでした。

共感嬉しいです。そうなんですよねー、あんなに好きだったコンバースが足に合わない😭悲しいような仕方がないような…気づきですよね。歩くのはクッション性のあるスニーカーがいいですよね。やっぱりアシックスかニューバランスが足に合うようです。
バスケ部にはよい思い出がまったくありませんが、NBAが素敵でバスケというものがカッコ良いと思った時代でした〜。

私も若い頃履きましたが、今はクッション性のあるスニーカーの方が歩きやすいです。
前に次女ちゃんにコンバースを買ってあげたのですが、見事に半年くらいしか保たず、泣きそうになりました。
かかとを地面に擦って歩いているらしく、かかとに穴が開き、こちらも雨が多いのですが、雨の日でもお構いなしに履いていたのでボロボロでした。
本人は凄く気に入っていて、ボロボロでも手放せず…靴底を切り取ってキャンバスの部分をスクラップブックに貼っていました🤣
次女ちゃんかわいい！そんなに気に入ってはいてくれたのならばまたお気に入りの色が見つかれば良いなと思います。ボロボロだってお気に入りなんですよね〜。私も昔黒のがお気に入りすぎて底がベロベロしてもなかなか捨てられなかったのを思い出しました。
おっしゃる通り、今はクッション性があってコンバースよりもゆったりとした幅のある歩きやすいスニーカーがやっぱり良いですね😀
Ah, I just read a news story and found out some info about this. It seems like Converse went bankrupt in 2003 and Nike bought them. Nike closed down all US factories and moved production to Thailand. Everyone says the quality took a nosedive at that time and that today's Chuck Taylor's are uncomfortable, don't last very long, and are more or less shit. That's too bad... I have always disliked Nike shoes and the company. This news makes me dislike them even more.
Wow! Thank you @dbooster for letting me know. It totally makes sense to me! I felt comfortable with my old Converse, but I felt uncomfortable with my newer ones. I didn't know they had gone bankrupt and been bought by Nike. I think vintage Converse are super expensive these days. I also feel uncomfortable wearing Nike shoes as well. I used to have Nike vintage sneakers and running shoes, but I didn't feel comfortable at all.
