Bagi yang sering mengonsumsi berita dari media online, pasti sering mengalami hal seperti ini; ketika sedang asyik-asyiknya membaca berita, tiba-tiba terpotong untuk klik halaman berikutnya. Kondisi ini sangat menganggu kenyamanan membaca berita.
Pola seperti itu sengaja dibuat dengan berbagai pertimbangan. Pertama, jumlah klik di sebuah berita akan meningkatkan jumlah kunjungan ke portal berita tersebut. Meski beritanya sama, sistem algoritma membaca sebagai hitungan jumlah kunjungan sehingga mempengaruhi rating.
Tidak heran hampir semua media online sekarang mengikuti pola seperti itu. Sudah jarang kita temukan satu berita selesai dalam satu halaman, kecuali untuk berita stop press yang sangat pendek. Untuk berita standar, minimal ada dua halaman.
Selain itu, pola itu dianut banyak media karena menganggap sudah semakin jarang pembaca membaca berita sampai selesai. Para pembaca dianggap hanya membaca judulnya saja, atau membaca lead berita karena sebagian informasi sudah ada di sana.
Padahal, banyak juga pembaca yang membaca berita sampai habis. Misalnya untuk berita yang disenangi, pembaca ingin tahu sampai huruf terakhir sebab biasanya sampai kata terakhir. Untuk berita sepak bola, pembaca ingin tahu bagaimana jalannya pertandingan, siapa saja yang mencetak gol, dan bagaimana gol tercipta. Jadi, skor akhir saja tidaklah cukup.
Tidak semua pembaca hanya ingin mengetahui informasi dari judulnya saja. Masih banyak yang ingin membaca berita sampai akhir. Dalam kasus seperti ini, ketika mendapatkan berita berlanjut ke halaman berikutnya, ia tetap membaca kalau menganggapnya penting. Kalau tidak, mereka tidak peduli dengan kejadian di halaman berikutnya.
