Street Photography in the Gothic Quarter of Barcelona

Let's continue our Barcelona chronicles with the next episode. This time we explore the gothic quarter which is the heart of the city and see how it suits for street photography. One thing I didn't get to experience is empty streets of the quarter in the early morning, all of my travel companions like to sleep in and take it easy so we were there together with hordes of people.

You can recognize the coastal city by the narrow streets of the "old town" which gothic quarter essentially is. It's there from the roman times and it developed its spirit through centuries. Usually these cities by the sea have a neighborhood with narrow streets and old buildings that give it its charm, or is it just me?

The quarter is a real labyrinth of streets - each corner you turn there's something interesting and unique to see, but it's also easy to get lost in it since the area is huge. There you can find shops of all kind selling things that were surprisingly not expensive compared to some other European cities. Balconies with interesting windows and ornaments, stone facades, flags of Catalunya, greenery, flowers and more. Barcelona cathedral is located inside the quarter as well as the Santa Maria del Mar basilica.

I was looking for interesting things and subjects to photograph, and even my friends posed in a few (I'll share the portraits I made with them in one of the next few publications).

The narrow streets forced me to shoot vertical most of the time. There's not much going on on the side and the passages are raising so tall. With my 50mm equivalent (35 * 1.4 crop) it was perfect for compressing the long pathways while being far enough to capture interesting passers-by. Rays of light barely get to travel through these giant structures,
but when they do, they create lovely patches of light against the shadow background. I hope you enjoy this series of images I took. :)

Damm, that first picture is like out of a painting!

I'm in love with these colors and with everything!

I'm so glad you like it! I was walking by with friends and noticed the man in the hat tying a shoelace, and immediately went over to capture the photo. Such a nice surrounding.

A thing I loved about that area were the shops that were absolutely tiny. Barely capable of fitting the owner in them. Felt like such a different world to walk though it. But so fun.

I haven't seen it to that extent, but yeah everything is packed tightly in there. :D And very old-fashioned and colorful.

I love this photos 🙌

Appreciate it! :)

Thank you!

We learned and gain some ideas about this place back when I studied in highschool during History class. I really amazed of the hidden stories of this place, the historical events of the past Generation.
