Caddy Lack Ranch

There's a ranch down in Texas where they're raising colorful cars. Raising may be too strong of an adjective though, they've been planted since the 70s and all they've grown is a coat of paint.

We passed by in search of the American Dream and couldn't help but stop. Does it get more American Dream than enjoying art by defacing it?

Looks like it's starting to collapse under its own weight. The layers of spray paint that is, not the American Dream.

The Dream's in no danger of collapse, it's too busy selling spray paint to tourists at $7.50 a can plus tax!

ATTENTION: SPRAY PAINTING OUTSIDE THE FENCE IS A FELONY! Now don't get caught and here's your change.

If it ever snowed in Texas this would be a fun place to shoot after a snowstorm but the phrase 'deadlier than Texans on ice' keeps coming to mind.

It's the American Carhenge, except that's in Nebraska. It's heartwarming to think that hundreds of years hence historians and archaeologists will be trying to piece together what sort of religious rituals occurred here and why did they require so much spray paint?

How many generations of spray paint were sacrificed to get that sort texture? May Henry Ford have mercy on their souls.

Naturally the rain followed me. Made for some ever changing light conditions, which was alternately fun and annoying. Seems to be about the only sure way of getting the place to yourself though. Just watch out for the mud.

After the rain though, that's the time to catch the caddies. 14 minutes and a lens change is all that separate those last two images but with the way the light was hitting the wet soil, it was different shooting entirely.

@dandays did you do this?

In case you were wondering how to find this place, just follow Graffiti Road and you can't miss it.

Sort:

Texas makes me think get to the other side, stat. I'll go a whole day without eating to avoid stopping in Texas.

= }

Whaddup. Negative, All my lock-out/tag-outs can be read without standing on your head.

Man, I second that. My last pass through Texas there was a stretch just outside Amarillo that had at least 9 state troopers plus some local yokels posted up along just a couple miles of I-40. They seemed to have gotten bored with speed traps and moved up to ambushes. It's like Kansas but hotter.

But that takes half the fun out of it! Lol, I saw that and knew I had to accuse you of being responsible.

Funny. Back in the day if someone identified their tag like that I'd have them change it. I'll still point out upside down police line on TV.

Those Caddy's make me wanna stop though.

You mean like this?

I just take photos of it and don't point it out. Fits LMPDs image better anyways.

If you're already on 40 heading through Texas it's worth a stop for sure. Don't know if I'd go out of my way or into Texas just for it though. Lol, at this point I think the Caddys are more paint than car.

Yes, that. Exactly. Can't take anyone seriously who safeties off an area like a moron.

I've gone that route sir at least twice, the 70 is so... Kansas and I never knew about those cars. Dammit. I had no idea brakes work on the 40.

I took 70 to Colorado once and swore if I made it out of Kansas I'd never set foot in it again, which was how I ended up on 40 in the first place. If you're heading east on 40 it's not too far past the giant shit smell but before you get to Amarillo on the south side of the interstate.

Who needs brakes when you've got friction and that much flat?

Ha, too funny. I know exactly where that is!! I call it Bush territory. Hahahahaha. I gotta shoot Pura a line now. Funny. Thanks.

Only $7.50 for a can of spray paint to add your "artistic touch" to vintage vehicles buried diagonally in the Texas soil? What a racket this Cadillac Ranch place has going on! Let's pull our Hive funds and stake somewhere to do something similar! @coloneljethro

Excellent, unique and definitely one-of-a- kind images!

Discovered entirely by accident that if you stand around with empty hands for very long there someone will give you spray paint. Been there twice and both times people just handed us fresh cans of paint. The trailer cashing in on the tourists wasn't there when I visited 5 years ago so it's a fairly new racket. I'm down! Now to figure out what, exactly...

Thank you!

Total strangers bonding all the while legally defacing property with supplied spray paint. The concept is mindblowing! It reminds me of Holi, the Hindu Festival of Colors, except with cars.

How did you come across this place in Amarillo the first time, five years ago?

Hmm. Let's think on it over the weekend and leave it open for suggestions from others. We know there are some creative minds on Hive!

Holi looks like it'd be lots of fun, except for my contacts and camera. Gonna have to figure out a way to photograph that at some point though.

I blame Bruce. On a more serious note, it's beside I-40 off the frontage road, saw it coming back from a different road trip and made plans to stop the next time I was out that way.

Yeah, lets see what we come up with, this could be fun :)

An amazing place! I would never have believed in his existence. But thanks to your photos, I believe))

It truly is, something else entirely :)

The cars are looking very colorful but why are they making those cars to stand or maybe bend
They’re not in a normal position right?

It's a public art installation/sculpture called Cadillac Ranch, they're all leaning at the same angle as the pyramids of Giza. Beyond that I can't really speak to 'why' but it grabs your attention :)

I doubt if people will respect the order that do not parked over there

I think it's part of the fun, just adding to the sense of doing something you're not supposed to. I think you are correct on that though.

This is so beautiful. People work so hard to make paintings like we see in the pictures and this place is also very special and beautiful so all these things are looking very beautiful.
