After a long break from traveling, a gin and tonic or two, and the devastating question in the family circle, what the greatest wish was, a famous destination came into play. As the flights seemed cheap at first sight, a nice snap idea was born, which kept us in suspense for the full 2 months before. It's hard to imagine how difficult it is to show another world to a minor you've lived with for almost ten years. It is even worse when he does not have a valid passport. The day before departure, we were finally able to receive the apostilled and notarized travel authorization after presenting it in person at the district court. And yes, it was checked, even twice.
New York, the city that never sleeps and seductively sparks with its lights and antennas to the distance. The city of the inventors of superheroes and super advertising, simply everything in super large, just because it can. But it steams in the streets. Who knows what it looks like under the city? Because so much glitz and glamour also has a downside. The young people, find the city great, because simply all the big brands are represented here, movies are made and somehow all the big companies are here. From toy manufacturers to the merch store of a young sorcerer's apprentice to chocolate manufacturers, all have recognized the radiance and use the city as a location for their embassies - just like the worldwide country representations at the United Nations. The city offers one thing above all: a perfect symbol of the "American Dream" - that collective dream that fuels the dollar because consumption has become the panacea of an entire society.
I've been consuming, too. The light, chased after it and sometimes walked towards it. Just did a little sport with my 50mm fixed focal length. On the longest day even 25km photo foot march came together. If only I had packed the more comfortable shoes. But somehow the magnetic attraction was great enough and sometimes it was simply helped - with the search for the next store, where there was highly sugary food, which was even usually cheaper than the healthy counterpart.
But if there's one thing I learned, sometimes you just have to go with the flow and make the most of the moment. So we were in full entertainment mode, one attraction every day: movie museum, boat ride around Manhattan, Madame Tussauds!, Statue of Liberty, observation deck and almost every day a short trip to Times Square and the famous 5th Avenue. It's a dazzling world that passes by quickly but still leaves its mark. Whether we all can or want to live like that? I dare to doubt it. But at least it offers room to renew one's own view somewhat, because in comparison many other cities are simply an oasis of calm.
