Aurora Borealis

All images are taken with Samsung Galaxy Flip 4 by yours truly.

When I was much younger, I saw a movie called The Bucket List (Epic, 100% recommend) starring Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman as the leads, and ever since, seeing the Northern Lights was on my bucket list. Somehow, I always thought Latvia was not far enough north to witness them fully. I thought I would have to make a trip to Norway or thereabout.

But just last year in March, I read in the news of the possibility of seeing them the following night. So, I went outside around midnight as recommended. At first, I did not see anything. Then, I noticed a faint glow in the sky. I almost mistook it for clouds. I took a photo with my Samsung Galaxy, and a couple of seconds later, I saw the rendering of the image. It was green! How many times have I looked in the night sky and did not even realize that Northern Lights are happening? Our eyes are a bit of garbage, and they do not see what cameras can see. So it turns out that sometimes you have to look out for something you do not see. Or something not as powerful as you would see in the photos.

However, that was not the case on the night of the 10th to 11th of May 2024. I was staring at my box and playing khem… Sims (Please, do not judge me! The game is nostalgic to me) when Lem told me we should have a look. He practically dragged me outside. And holy moly! I could not believe my eyes! There was no room for mistaking it for clouds or anything. I saw the colors, sure not as vividly as in the photos, but colors nonetheless!

We were outside for hours, observing it come in waves. It was pure magic in the sky. Our planet's magnetic field shield was fully engaged in the battle with the fast-traveling particles launched by the sun.

It starts with more concentrated streaks of vivid colors, and as it goes on longer, they begin to disperse wider and become more pastel tones. I feel that the feathery clouds at the time only added to the epicness of what we witnessed. As it turns out, that might have been one of the strongest geomagnetic storms of a couple of decades.

We were so lucky and happy to experience it! ^^

Song of the day: Gunship - The Gates of Disorder

Too beautiful...

Right? After seeing what I saw, I now hope to see more in future. I would even make a trip just for that :)

The aurora looks pretty good, it's quite amazing. You live in an area where the aurora can be seen. Very good photos

Incredibly lucky, but something tells me it is because of the increased solar activity that more places in the world can see them other than far north. Sure, I had heard of sighting here in Latvia for years before, but I was under impression that they were not so intensely visible.

I am beyond happy to have captured this :)

The colors are perfect, your hands and eyes are amazing

Ahaha, thank you, but I still give all the credit to the Samsung galaxy flip 4 to have captured this spectacle. And in future I hope to invest more in acquiring a much better camera for low light events such as this one and also for macro photography. These things are so expensive though.

La naturaleza demostrando que es excelente artista 🥳🎉👏👏👏👏👏

¡Eso es tan cierto! :)

The shots are great
Samsung has a very good camera
I love it!

Thank you @rafzat! I have been very pleased with this phone. It is great substitute to my other much heavier camera, and does much better with videos, and certain photography like at night time for one. It means I have to look for an upgrade soon.

Wow, it has more colours than most northern lights I've seen.😍 Would it be right to call it a rainbow of the night?
You have captured truly beautiful pictures.😊
Sending Love and Ecency Vote!

It was so powerful! Rainbow is exactly what came to my mind when seeing it. Something so colorful and strong for sure does not happen often.

You have captured truly beautiful pictures.

Thank you so much! ^^

These are unbelievable. I was amazed that you can see the northern lights from anywhere in the world. I think it had something to do with solar flares. I read something about that on the news. Really beautiful shots.

Thank you! I am happy to share them.

Yup, this year and next year is the right time to watch out for something this amazing in the night sky. I linked a cool site in one of the comments that shows forecasts, and lets you know when there is a high a chance to see them. So many people dream of traveling to see them one day, maybe that day can arrive pretty fast, and right in their backyard.

I am so jealous!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I was in Tallinn at the time and didn't have a chance for pictures :(

Great shots

I am so jealous!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Aww. You probably would have gotten even crazier shots to be fair. Father north and stuff. This site is pretty cool for keeping an eye on when there might be a chance to see them: https://aurorareach.com/

I still want to go more north to see the lights. Not sure if the experience would be different but I am curious. This year and until end of the next year is probably the best time for it :)

I saw them too:

Some people said it was the glow of neon lights but they're just jealous.

Which sims? I've had 3 installed for ages cuz i loved it so much when I played it like 2 years ago and stopped for no reason (typical sims behaviour)

Damn! And holy smokes, the web of roads you have there!

It was Sims 4. Ahaha, typical sims behavior indeed! My love for playing sims comes and goes. I just love building them homes and making their lives better. I have never tried any extension packs (aka the money dump) even though there is one for vampire sims that is a bit tempting. But the reviews for it are terrible, and I probably would turn out disappointed in the end xD

I am envious. Light pollution is getting bad where I live. So many city folk moving to the country seem afraid of the dark, and they light up their yards, driveways, and inevitably the sky itself. Dark is hard to find, and I missed this aurora display.

Oh! I am so sorry to hear that. It seems that people are also less concerned about saving energy. Everything gets lit up at night. What are they doing at night in their yards anyway? Looking at racoons and foxes? xD I understand if you want to chill a bit and have the lights, but then they leave and all the lights stay on?

I hope you get to experience them soon despite the difficulties.

Oh my dear Lord!! How’s that possible!! I really want to see that at least once in my life!! That must be magical!!

I love Sims as well, hehe

It is worth it and magical is exactly the word that came to my mind over and over seeing them. Maybe if you travel somewhere closer north this year or next year you could check that off your list too. They should be pretty strong during this time. Stars could align for you :)

Yea, Sims can be a fun distraction from time to time.

Holy crap you had a good one over there! I saw some snaps here from people who caught it on fridaynight (here in netherlands also never happening) and i stayed awake for the saturday which never had the colour.

But the fact that now all of a sudden is also visible here south is truly something special!

Love the vividness of your snaps!

Yeah, it might have been the maximum of the solar activity. So strong. But who knows maybe more is yet to come. Sometimes you have to take a picture with your phone to test if something is there or not and then also it could be weaker or stronger over a course of few hours. We saw at least three waves of it. Like it almost disappeared between the first and second wave we saw. The second one was the strongest of them. I was lost for words.

This year and the next year they might show up more even south.

Love the vividness of your snaps!

Thank you! I am so happy that I did not decide to continue play sims that night, hehe.
