Catsploring Bangkok. Saen Saep Canal Neighborhoods

Rushing on an express boat to meet cats in the maze of alleys! 😎

There are many charming neighborhoods along Khlong Saen Saep, densely inhabited by all sorts of cats,

that's where I was going in one April day.

Si Yaek Maha Nak neighborhood with its landmark, Maha Nak mosque. Diving in the alleys to meet its four-legged citizens.

A friendly house pussy who isn't afraid to go out to unpredictable streets... With a tiny wound on the head that looked like ringworm. 😐 But, okay, that's not the same as having syphilis in the 19th century; the owners will cure their fluffy friend. 🙂

That's where the things were happening:

A typical "street" in Maha Nak neighborhood. 😀 I just want you to know that. Sometimes, instead of a cat, you find a foot of a sleeping person sticking from a door gap. 😀

Another amazing alley dweller:

By how calm this cat is, you can understand that she has a home and how she is loved there. Let's zoom at the princess:

😻 Fantastic beauty, isn't it?!

Happy Burmese-like feline, chilling out next to the washing machine, outdoors, but 30 cm from the door.

Not far from Maha Nak neighborhood, there is another place called Ban Khrua. That's another place I visited to meet fluffy heroes.

That's a male who mostly lives in the street but probably has an owner. He looks this way, at least. He was spraying onto the wall at the moment (in front of gerls! by the way)

That's him, with a damaged eye but happy after successful spraying. The gerls:

A house pussy who feels weird about odd street characters; and an old stray hag:

A lot of things happen in dark alleys away from the sun. That's awful hot season this year, +38 in the afternoon in the shade is daily, week by week, no rain, no overcast sky. Both people and cats feel uncomfortable to go out in the sun. But around 5 pm, they all start to appear in open spaces.

Morning exercises at 5 pm.

That's the roof to fry eggs in the afternoon but look at it at 5:45 pm:

Another roof climber:

She was so surprised by my interest that she got frozen for a while.

Aaadorable character from Ban Khrua neighborhood.

Love meeting the grays, there are few of them in Bangkok (although Thailand's less famous cat breed, Korat, is gray.)

There is an interesting thing about cats in Bangkok streets. They often stay very near to their homes, like, they go out and lie down in 30 cm from the door. Like this amazing cat in the image. She belongs to a workshop, and you can see the entrance into it on the right.

At the moment, she was looking at me in a defensive way. She had first tried not to notice me, then started showing she was attractive and friendly, but then got uncomfortable because of my lingering attention. I respected her request and left her in peace.

More cat stories from Southeast Asia are ahead! Check out my previous posts on my personal Pinmapple map.

I took these images with a Nikkor 50mm and Nikkor 70-300mm on a full-frame DSLR Nikon D750 in April-May 2024, in Bangkok, Thailand.
