School is such a waste of time

In another episode I agree to disagree, I want to bring up the topic about how school can be such a waste of time. Truth is, there’s only 2% of that idea that I agree with because I had a great personal experience. That 2% makes up of the common idea that it is such a waste of time with the standard education that most receive. The education system has had its flaws and when mingling with others I realized, the school has had so little impact on their life and pretty much of their adulthood. One of the major problems, at least in my country, is the ever-changing curriculum and that it depends on the minister in charge. Sometimes we lean in towards European education but other times, it’s American style. In my opinion, school should be the place where people learn how to deal with the future, with the problems we might face growing up. In reality, a lot of us spent 12 years in education only sometimes to remember nothing that we’ve ever taught at school.

Welcome to my brain dump, it’s morning and when I am able to sit down, sipping a cup of coffee while contemplating about life and emptying it out a little.

Where & when I grew up, back in the day education was all about memorizing some random facts thrown around. For a lot of us, we are not really taught practical life of things. There were no entrepreneurship projects or programs in most schools. Some older teachers love getting violent too at times and it makes the learning experience worse. Around 2015 something was still a transition era from violent teacher to teachers that no longer uses violence to teach. Anyone going to school around that year, could have experienced the “violent” era of education.

When I was bringing up this topic with the people I grew up with, we disagreed that school is a waste of time. But the thing is our experiences are part of the outlier. We went to an amazing school and our parents paid a hefty price for our education.

Did it really have an impact on our life? a lot would say, even for me. At school, we are prepped to be savvy businesspeople. We always have these monthly programs that “guide” us to become entrepreneurs. We have to sell something & that requires budgeting, marketing, and even finding the item to sell even just to our friends and teacher. Sometimes we have projects where we have to find unique items that can be sold and invested in. If getting money was one goal of someone going to school, that place would have been an amazing investment. After all, it supports us becoming entrepreneurs through their various programs.

Some of our teachers were pretty eclectic too. We learned about forex trading during economy class. Some taught us how to flip housing, farming ideas, and a lot more ideas to make money. Interestingly, these days a lot of restaurants and cafe owners in town are my batch friends. So, perhaps one of those classes does have an impact on them one way or another.

However, I can’t say the same with other schools and other experiences. When people told me school is a waste of time, I could sympathize with them where perhaps their education wasn’t teaching them something useful that can be used growing up or even help them earn money.

During high school, making money online wasn’t something so strange. After all, I started my hustle from high school too and that was because we all had the advantage of 1) having a laptop, 2) internet connection, 3 ) we speak other languages.

Our extra activities support a lot of hobbies that make money too. We had various extra programs from a simple theatrical work to robotics which was pretty rare back in 2014-ish considering that we’re from a small town. We even had this school journalism that actually publishes magazines and makes money too.

So, did we learn about personal finance and taxation? somehow we did too. We are taught how to calculate tax but never taught that it would make up pretty much of our adulthood. The only thing that I admit lacking was definitely how to manage stress. We have this guide/mental health counselor at school but pretty much of it was by visit. So, a lot of us aren’t really using the service.

But again, our experience was an outlier & I realized where the narrative of school is a waste of time coming from. I mean this blog example, lays out all the reasons why school is a waste of time. Sadly, nothing of that is our experience growing up.

While they teach you to write essays and read books, they might not spend enough time on everyday communication skills. Things like speaking clearly, writing emails, or even public speaking can get left behind.

I realized that too where even at university, I was baffled by others' capability of making presentations. After talking to my highschool friend, they experienced the same thing. For us, presentation is an everyday task, we have to do it daily, we have to debate our ideas and continuously improve our presentation. But I do agree that most schools should be teaching them.

Unfortunately, that same school I went to has declined by a lot. While it is still one of the best in town, it is no longer as prestigious as it would be. It was all thanks to the ever-changing curriculum where they have to adjust and double down on the subjects they taught. From my cousin, I learned the school doesn’t teach them about Information & technology anymore as well as another language. While those are necessities in today’s economy, I am honestly surprised that has changed a lot but I also heard from another younger generation of that school where the school is now teaching investment and they have an investing club which I think really helps down the line.

So, how was school to you? Do you think it’s a waste of time?

We also experienced some education problems here in the Philippines. Other people says that, Kto12 classes is no used because it addens of a big burden of school fees.

There are different kinds of problems just like the one in your informative article, I hope this can be solve.
