Put simply, Trump’s legal team has made several considerable, and at times baffling, missteps over the course of the trial that have increased the odds of a conviction.

They want the debate to occur inside a TV studio, with microphones that automatically cut off when a speaker’s time limit elapses. And they want it to be just the two candidates and the moderator — without the raucous in-person audiences that Mr. Trump feeds on and without the participation of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. or other independent or third-party candidates.

Trump will almost certainly reject these conditions. He needs to constantly interrupt so couldn’t countenance being silenced when his time was up. I’d be surprised if debates actually occur.

Bjoern Hoecke, the head of the AfD in the eastern state of Thuringia, was fined €13,000 ($14,063) by a court in Halle for using the Nazi catchphrase ‘Alles für Deutschland’ — or ‘everything for Germany’ — at a party rally in May 2021.
