The End of an Era for Cheap Chinese Goods

In separate but overlapping efforts, former President Donald J. Trump and President Biden have sought to revive and protect American factories by making it more expensive to buy Chinese goods. They have taxed imports in legacy industries that were hollowed out over the last quarter-century, like clothes and appliances, and newer ones that are struggling to grow amid global competition with China, like solar panels.
Mr. Biden’s decision on Tuesday to codify and escalate tariffs imposed by Mr. Trump made clear that the United States has closed out a decades-long era that embraced trade with China and prized the gains of lower-cost products over the loss of geographically concentrated manufacturing jobs. A single tariff rate embodies that closure: a 100 percent tax on Chinese electric vehicles, which start at less than $10,000 each and have surged into showrooms around the world, but have struggled to crack government barriers to the U.S. market.

Benny Gantz Threatens to Withdraw from Government

Former Israeli defense minister and war cabinet member Benny Gantz is demanding that the cabinet lays out a plan for the war against Hamas by June 8.
In remarks in the city of Ramat Gan on Saturday night local time, Gantz warned that if his demands are not met, he will withdraw from the government.
He said the plan should eliminate Hamas, bring back the hostages, establish an alternative government in the strip, bring back Israeli residents to the north of Israel, and set up a plan to make progress on normalization with Saudi Arabia.

Why Little-Known Doug Burgum Is in Trump’s VP Mix

Burgum’s recent proximity to Trump, as a companion on the campaign trail and a surrogate on television and at swanky dinners, has boosted his profile as one of the top candidates for Trump’s running mate.
Trump’s embrace of Burgum reveals what is really important to the VP search, according to people close to the former president: whether Trump likes the person, regardless of what they bring to the ticket. Trump likes that Burgum is rich, loyal and good looking, according to people close with the presumptive GOP nominee.
Said one Republican: “He’s a rich guy with rich friends. That goes a long way with Trump. It also goes a long way with a campaign that’s shorter on cash than the other team.”

Testifying Would Be ‘Really Dangerous’ for Trump

Donald Trump will face one of the most consequential decisions of the year—if not his career—when he chooses whether to testify in his own criminal trial in New York.
Politically, taking the stand might offer Trump the chance to project strength and defiance in the face of a prosecution he has decried as illegitimate. But legal experts believe the presumptive GOP presidential nominee faces peril if he is grilled about his alleged sexual encounter with Stormy Daniels and his treatment of women.
Manhattan prosecutors are expected to rest their case in the week ahead, shifting the focus to Trump’s defense. His lawyers plan to call few, if any, witnesses. Twice this past week, they have told the judge that Trump is undecided about testifying.

Trump has said that he’ll testify but since he’s much more comfortable with lying rather than speaking the truth, my money is on him not taking the stand.

Pentagon Rushes to Counter Threats in Orbit

The Pentagon is rushing to expand its capacity to wage war in space, convinced that rapid advances by China and Russia in space-based operations pose a growing threat to U.S. troops and other military assets on the ground and American satellites in orbit.
Details of the push by the Pentagon remain highly classified. But Defense Department officials have increasingly acknowledged that the initiative reflects a major shift in military operations as space increasingly becomes a battleground.
No longer will the United States simply rely on military satellites to communicate, navigate and track and target terrestrial threats, tools that for decades have given the Pentagon a major advantage in conflicts.
