Carrier Pigeons and Cryptography

Hey dear community, first of all I would like to welcome you all to my new post and hope you had a day that was full of interesting experiences! In this post, I would like to talk a little about cryptography and hope you can expand your knowledge.

Here you can see some pictures of pigeons that have been known since ancient times for delivering messages and even the ancient Egyptians knew that pigeons could be used to transfer messages and the advantage was that the message was difficult to catch and reached their places unerringly. The breeding was improved more and more and many new ways were found to optimize it and pigeons came over time to Europe where it quickly became popular to breed them and the people noticed that they could use pigeons in times of crisis to pass on the necessary information in a short time and it was also of great importance for seafarers to be able to communicate on long journeys. Carrier pigeons were particularly often used in armed conflicts and the message was written encrypted or unencrypted on a piece of paper and tied around the foot of the pigeon and then the pigeon flew to inform them about certain scenarios and after it arrived the destination, it needed a few days of rest and food and then a message was sent back. Carrier pigeons were only very rarely intercepted and were considered an extremely secure method of communication and therefore they were often relatively open and often did not encrypt the messages and only sensitive information was transmitted encrypted and it was of course important that the recipient knew how to decrypt the message.

To ensure this, a procedure was previously agreed and even if a pigeon was intercepted, other people could not read the message and so it could be precisely ensured that it only reached the right recipient and during times of war pigeons were trained and released in certain areas and the troops were informed and so the pigeons knew their task and later found their way back. During the Second World War, hundreds of thousands of pigeons were used and it was one of the important methods for the transmission of messages, which even replaced other cryptographic methods and various types of encryption methods were used, which are not all known to this day and as is typical for encryption, these were almost unbreakable if no one know which methods were chosen and only the recipient knows how to decrypt the message. Carrier pigeons navigate in an intelligent way and are considered smart animals that are able to store many patterns in their brain and are able to fly several hundred kilometers and have an extremely good sense of orientation and follow the natural magnetic field of the earth, the sun and smells. There are also assumptions that pigeons orientate with the help of infrasound to be able to move even better and are also able to find the shorter paths and how exactly pigeons orient themselves is still a topic that interests science very much today.

Thank you for the visit and I hope you could learn something new about this interesting topic! I captured these pictures with my Camera Sony Alpha 6000 plus 55-210 mm lens
