Portuguese City Christmas lights 2021: Hope for the dreamers

In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in lightning up Portuguese cities for Christmas. Besides lights, there are several decorations, activities for children, small markets with regional products, and souvenirs. In my hometown, Leiria, I have been noticing that all the decorations, lights, and Christmas-related activities are getting better with the years.

This year, they light up the entire castle which is on the top of a hill and is the main heritage building of the city - Castle of Leiria.

Some people complain about the money municipalities spent on Christmas decorations, while others see it as an investment in people's happiness and also in tourism.

December holidays allow people to slow down, travel, and spend time with friends and family. One of my favorite activities during this season is to walk in the illuminated cities, it boosts so much joy!! At least for those who are dreamers like me!😄

I have been postponing this post for the past month because it requires some dedication to select the best photos. It is much more pleasant to go outside to walk and enjoy the lights while they are still turned on. However, the festivities have already finished, and it is time to move on, which means to post before the next festivities arrive (Carnival!).

Swings are a trend nowadays, and there were four themed swings in Leiria: Leiria, Natal which means Christmas in Portuguese, Sorrir which means 'smile' and Amor which means....Love.

This is certainly one of my favorite villages in Portugal. As I was passing by I thought I should stop to see the lights, and in an ordinarily sense: I loved it!!😃 but....

...but, I cannot avoid and see they have used pampas grass as part of their decoration. The problem is that pampas grass (Cortaderia selloana) is an invasive plant spreading fast in Portugal. Some people are aware of its invasiveness but think that picking up the plumes is helping in its management/ control. However, they are very likely spreading the seeds.
Unfortunately, this has become a trend and it is difficult to reach everyone. It would be better if people doesn't use the plumes at all. Everyone can help by picking the plumes and killing the seeds by storing them in a bag until they are rotten, burying them, or burning. More detailed information can be found in the project Life Stop Cortaderia.

Somehow, these lights feed me with hope

Hope for:
1. a better version of me;
2. a cleared mind;
3. better days
4. more free time
5. better relationships
6. dreams achievements
7. more empathy and compassion worldwide

May the new year bless us with health, wealth, and peace of mind!!

Those pictures are beautiful and make me dreaming of traveling (I had to cancel two visits to Portugal because of COVID during the last 20 months).

Happy new year and best wishes for 2022!

This pandemic has been very exasperating in what concerns traveling. Hope you can make it happen during 2022. I truly believe that in a couple of months things will be easier. If you are vaccinated it is easier, at least that was my experience in the late September when travelling to Italy.

Thank you, wish you (too) a great 2022 ahead!

It is easier but we are again in the middle of a blurry period, with numbers not going into the good direction. Anyways, we will see... we will see....
