Discovering Crete, Part 9 - Night falls upon Mátala [Mobile photography]

Greetings Steemians!

After a delicious and sumptuous dinner which I enjoyed at the end of my last post, I went on a digestive stroll along the bay.

The west orientation of the bay makes Mátala a great place to enjoy the setting sun. The golden glow that illuminates the alleys and the surrounding sandstone is just marvellous:

The bow of a ship that never moves...

(In fact, it is the terrace of a restaurant, modelled after a ship's bow. Can you see the exotic bird, too?)

The last rays of the sun.

After the sun has set, spotlights take over and illuminate the sandstone rocks. Quite a stretch for my iPhone's cam.

Venus, the "Evening Star" appears over the cliff. Time for a good night's sleep before heading to the next destination.

Thanks for watching and 'til next time!

Shaka

Wow, what a flashback. Spent some time in one of the ground level caves back in the mid 70's. That was before the night lighting. My guess is that overnight stays are now forbidden too?

Really, you have been there in the 70s? Cool! Have you met some of the cafe dwellers.

I assume it's nowadays officially forbidden to set camp there but I heard that a few hardened hippies / alternatives are still living in some of the more remote caves.

Have you met some of the cafe dwellers.

Not sure if you mean those who hung out and worked in the cafe or if it is a typo and you meant cave dwellers.

There was some drinking done in the Mermaid Cafe (obligatory to Joni Michell fans at the time) yet no deep connections made with the folks who worked there. Used to party with folks who also were staying in the caves. One such night almost cost me my life.

We had been drinking and smoking in one of the upper tiered caves and it was getting late and time to lay my tipsy head down. Went walking out of there as if it were my ground floor cave. It was right out of a road runner cartoon. Either in the fall or the landing I became unconscious.

It was late in the quiet night when consciousness returned. The memory of travelling to Greece was still vivid, yet had no idea if I was still in Greece nor where was the present location in the dark moonless night. My hosts had been staying in a cave that was more on the inland side which placed me after the fall in, what at that time had been, a small olive grove.

I started walking through the grove until finally coming to the road on the other side. Having no idea which way to go I chose to the right which led me into Matala. A left turn would have had me stumbling along the roadway for many kilometers. My memory started coming back (or maybe I was just more sober at that point) once coming into town, eventually finding my way back across the beach to recover in my cave.

Lost one of my nine cat's lives that night.

Thank you very much for contributing your personal story about that night. For me, this contributes more to the peculiarity of this place than a travel guide could ever do.

And yes, as you rightly suspected, I obviously meant those staying in the caves :)

Cheers!

Wow, these cliff shadows by the lights are looking awesome.

is it a bird, or is it a flag looks like a bird :) ?

phantastic trip!

The latter :) It's the Bob-Marley flag which I also captured in the previous post. Found it kind of special that the flag got frozen by the cam in the shape of a bird. Adds somewhat of a Caribbean flair to the image :)

Really amazing and i want to say one thing that, people who will spend their time in those houses close to SEA then in my opinion they will going to feel the blessed essence because the view is just beautiful and so admirable.

The immovable bow of Ship possibly telling the old stories and also telling the strength of old and ancient times. And these kind of untouched and gem like places can be proved as great explorative places.

Specially i liked the Last Rays of the Sun picture and literally that effect is so beautiful and it's looking as Sun is trying to hide but those rays of sun made sun caught.

After sun set for sure those rocks are literally shining and their beauty got expanded and the add on effect in those rocky pictures is the evening star venus and these kind of scenes can create great essence in heart.

Wishing you an great day and stay blessed. 🙂

I hope that you really enjoyed two weeks of this tour, and i want to say that you captured some gems of Nature. This place have very unique essence and all stuff like, mountains, trees, flowers and animals, and every stuff reflecting natural beauty. You shared some macro pictures and those pictures are just amazing to watch. And in my opinion the most beautiful picture is the one where we can see an rocky way but those flowers on both sides making this picture as way towards amazing world.

In my opinion the goat is having nice time roaming there, most of the time rocky and mountain places have very raw essence but this place literally have beautiful mixture.

Thanks for sharing this post with us and wishing you an great day. Stay blessed. 🙂

🌟

Amazing and these trees are reflecting in an pattern and this pattern showcasing the art of ancient cropping. And whenever we watch any pattern in natural stuff then for sure that stuff really give us some amazing artistic essence.

And after exploring these pictures we can see one thing for sure and that is nature is telling that no matter what i am the Boss and here the human made structures are destroyed but those greenery is so refreshing that's why i can say that nature is superior than us and we have to respect nature for that.

Those composition of four pictures are truly reflecting one thing and that is pure Emptiness and Loneliness and that's why slowly nature is taking away this place and one day everything will be covered with greenery.

Hi shaka how are you? I am surprised with the majestic images that you show me today Matala at sunset is very beautiful and when night falls there is definitely magic in that place
When looking at these images I feel that I am there and my mind relaxes and it is transported to a wonderful place. This trip by your side has shown me a place that I never knew and I thank you that you dedicate yourself to take the best photos
Publications like yours are the ones that are worth watching every day because apart from knowing a new place my eyes are filled with joy when looking at all this
I hope to see you soon with another excellent publication I send you a big hug from Venezuela

Crete is a very dazzling island. It was added to Greece in 1913, its history is very interesting, since it is the last one that was formed during the Neolithic period. Today, Crete is one of the fascinating islands of Greece for its mythological and even mysterious past, as well as having a mountain landscape full of olive trees, cliffs on the sea, literally hidden villages, lonely beaches, all this is conjugated to be part of a dream island for tourists eager for adventure and exuberant landscapes. Hence the beauty of the Bay of Màtala, which is like the spoiled child of Crete, its landscapes are a mystery because there are caves that really do not know if they were made by the hand of man. It is a matter of curiosity to know who made the first caves, but from what I read, it seems that they were created by the Romans or were used as Christian tombs. The cliffs and cliffs overlooking the mysterious beauty of the bay lead us to the curiosity of admire such beautiful landscapes. Aggravated again by the good shots that you have the pleasure of sharing with your followers, I am the lover of the beach, once again you gave me the opportunity to read, those publications of yours so well explained and that only with the creativity of our mind Take a walk along your camera and enjoy these beautiful landscapes, for me at sunrise and sunset it is unparalleled since one of my delusions is that part of the miracle of creation and opens your eyes to the world and then to the night to say goodbye to all these beautiful landscapes that surround us. Your publication has been fascinating with the beautiful shadows. I have no choice but to greet you from a distance @shaka

wie immer wundervolle Bilder. Vorallem di Abend- und Nachtstimmungen sind genial.

Wow! @shaka You took these nice photographs just with mobile phone! Photo quality of your phone is quite remarkable. The photograph of 'bow of the ship' is very nice. I hope your trip had been full of enjoyment. Waiting for the next part.

That first photo of the walkway to the ocean is a keeper. I could see that framed on a wall somewhere.

I think that nothing could have been better without a doubt a perfect moment accompanied by a good dinner now of a beautiful sunset

A wonderful place to be, I think I could stay here, haha, I'd enjoy it a lot It is beautiful to see how the sun illuminates every part of this beach and then the night comes and everything looks even more beautiful

Nice pictures you can capture every moment I'm anxious to see the next stop @shaka

Sehr rauhe See, warst du schon im Meer?

This are great photographs, I really love that they are nature photo but if edited with affinity photo... I promise you would be blown out...

Steve1122 says great work and thanks for the upvotes you really helping young steemian grow.

It really is an exquisite picture. Positive face pauses and poses make the picture attractive. Pope has not seen the nation before. The wonderful background of the movie has touched my mind. The camera has a great use of the camera. It has been properly focused and framing. Thanks to the great picture that has been made. And the editors of this photo have added more mahita. Generally edited! These pictures will be inspired by Namidami Photographer. Moodle will be the cause of jealousy. This picture. Because of the combination of ordinary model, photographer, location and editing, I have seen so many beautiful pictures. Facebook bookmakers want to see more of such pictures. Real people want to see such wonderful pictures of the people repeatedly. Finally, I want to speak some emotional truth. I have lost the language today by commenting on such a beautiful photo post. First of all, commenting on the post was not a very easy task. Every person around me helped me with the sweat of the head and commented on this post. That's why I want to thank Sir Mark Zuckerberg first. If he did not, I would not have commented on this post today. Then I will thank my grandfather. If not born, my father was not born. And if my father was not born, I would not have been born. And if I was not born, I could not comment on this post. Then I want to thank you for the shoe of my shoe. One day, I went out of a big accident when I was tied to a shoe. If I die that day, I could not comment on the post today. I can not write anything else Being annoyed by your comments on my post, my hands are shaking with excitement, my eyes are flooded with joy.

Great post, I will upvote and follow.

Nice photography. Depicts a sense of hope and a bit of nature in the unleashing desert. Clear shots. The flowers though simple look great in the desert like place. Well I am impressed by your work @shaka. Keep up the good work and sharing such posts with us.
