Contests & AltTokens & [Blah]Shares & HF20 & Onboarding New Users

in #steem7 years ago (edited)

Going to go on a short rant.

If you want Steem to "MOON" or "go to $10" then peripheral services, giveaways and contests that revolve around other tokens|coins|shares|currencies|software are irrelevant. Downright stupid in my opinion.

HF20 is focused on onboarding new users right? Right.

Everyone here, who knows a thing or two, knows that for Steem to grow, there needs to be large scale adoption of the platform (hence the focus of HF20).

The most significant source of user growth is going to come from people who don't know, nor care all that much about crypto currency. Do you know what that means?

They won't care, nor will they want to care about any coin or token or share or software outside of Steem. The ones that do care will likely get overwhelmed and frustrated at all the technicalities of having to maintain wallets and logins and what tokens go with what services, etc.

If you want Steem to grow, stop promoting and requiring users HERE to use some other random token or software to participate in whatever you're offering.

It's pointlessly annoying and over complicated. Twitter in it's general simplicity has suffered it's entire lifetime with intuitiveness. People still don't get Twitter to this day, Twitter can't grow their platform. You know why, because Twitter isn't intuitive to non-technical, basic users. They can't figure out what it's for and how to use it and other things that should be easy.

Creating services or contest rewards that require knowledge of another currency or token adds complexity and dilutes intuitiveness as a whole. That's not a good thing. It really isn't.

Getting a reward from some contest is a wonderful feeling. Having to figure out how exactly in the world to claim and use those rewards isn't a wonderful feeling. Making use of some helpful 3rd party service is awesome. Having to figure out how to get a new wallet, exchange funds for tokens, send tokens, and jump through endless hoops to use the service isn't a wonderful feeling.

If you want Steem to continue being the social media realm for the technically savvy and the crypto fanatics ... then by all means continue on with all the random giveaways and services that require the latest and greatest token. If you want to grow Steem in a truly helpful way, focus on intuitiveness. Don't overcomplicate things.

Oh, this also applies to any 3rd party services ... like chat services.

Oh you want to be part of this really cool XYZ Community here on Steem?! Welp, you'll need to install X software, then signup for Y account, then join Z community in LaLaLand.

These things will completely go over the heads of the people needed to actually grow Steem. And many of those people will leave because of it.

I agree with you for the most part. I don't think Steem is an unnessary hoop. I do think having to get bitcoin, use shapeshift or coinbase to do so is unnecessary. The internal market should make it possible for people to purchase SBD or Steem directly with fiat. Lower the barrier for entry that much and kill all spam, worthless competitions which require nothing more than breathing and were good :)

Very good material

I think one of the reason that these services exist is that sometimes we don't really need to use it here (just yet) to create unnecessary "trash trails" in such a transparent and open (forever staying as long as Internet lives) platform.

For me, I use discord and my other new friend I found here uses Facebook to help promote the awareness of Steem.

I personally would love to catapult steem to something more valuable than blog, earn, and withdraw (if you know what I mean)

Maybe you can take a look at my post and see if that make sense.

Steemit Evolution: Going Beyond

I have not heard of HF20 just yet. Is there a more N00b version of it out there?

For me I see Steemit has a lot of potential to become a sustainable ecosystem IF each and every person take part of it, especially the ones who is willing to take the risk in staying and ended up going through the ups and downs with the steemit developers.

But how many out there are both on short term gain and long term evolution? Only time will tell.
(You got to have to taste the gains a little and see its potential on the long run, then it is more than a dream. It becomes a vision)

Humans have come into such a social lifestyle comfort that everything is instant , hassle free and served, that people who innovates and participate is dwindling off from the face of the earth.

I hope my comment makes sense. haha.
sweat

Good point! Some day I got exactly in the situation that I was rewarded with some anything, had to join anywhere and then stuck there for no reason as to find out that there is nobody to give me the rewards they promised me.
(no crypto content on my blog)
