Halifax. A City Destroyed and then Rebuilt #teamcanada #whereimfrom

To kick off the #teamcanada invasion of Steemit today I'm showcasing where I'm from..

This is Halifax Nova Scotia. It was founded in 1749 as a British Commonwealth. A fortress was immediately built to protect the harbour and the newly settled Europeans from the local Acadians and Mic Mac Indians. The fort is called the Citadel.

The British set up the port town for trade and its history is steeped in bloody conflict with the Native Indians and the French Acadians that were here before the takeover.

The fortress sits atop a hill overlooking the city and the port of Halifax in the centre of town

The European settlers spread throughout Nova Scotia setting up towns and the population grew. Many people made their living off of the ocean. The province of Nova Scotia is a Peninsula that juts out into the Atlantic ocean. Ship building was also another major economic driver.

In 1917, a French munitions ship, named the Mount Blanc was steaming into the harbour loaded with munitions, the fog was thick and it collided with a Belgian relief vessel named the Imo. The ships caught fire and there was a massive explosion that completly leveled the city.

11,000 souls were killed or wounded and it was the largest man made explosion up until the development and use of nuclear weapons.

The devestation was so bad people came from all over to help the wounded and rebuild the city. A significant amount of Bostonians came down the eastern seaboard to help in the effort and because of this relations between our two cities is great. Every year Halifax cuts a massive Christmas tree down and trucks it to Boston so they can light and erect it. It's a nice symbol to let them know we haven't forgotten and appreciate their efforts.

Because of Halifax's location it was the port of entry for many immigrants and settlers coming to North America.

There's a building named pier 21 that has a museum documenting such. Its near the cruise ship port so it attracts alot of visitors.

Halifax has the second most bars per capita of anywhere in Canada and also the most universities. It's a university town and in September it's population swells. According to census stats we're around 400 thousand residents.

Because of Halifax's location to the sinking of the Titanic we have a graveyard with many of the dead resting here. There's a museum dovoted to the ship and it's also a popular destination for tourists.

Downtown Halifax is a nice mix of Heritage buildings and cobblestone streets protected from redevelopment. We also have many newer modern buildings.

A popular figure here is a man named Alexander Kieth, he was a brewer. The Kieths brewery is still intact and their beers are very popular across Canada.

It has been since sold to multinational company but they still produce the product here.

Hockey.. like in most of Canada, is extremely important to the people here. Local stars include Sidney Crosby, Brad Marchand and Nathan McKinnon to name a few.

The television show Trailer Park boys is filmed nearby and its stars still reside in the area. It's common to see Ricky, Bubbles, Julien or Mr Lahey around town.

One of my favorite things, besides the stunning beauty of this area is its people. We're laid back helpful and very friendly. I love living here and couldn't imagine not being near the water.

awesome post man, I think your really starting something great here. Halifax looks very beautiful man. That explosion was certainly tragic, I remember the heritage video of the morse code guy tapping that thing.

That was fun. One of my favorite leadership teachers is Claude Hamilton. I've heard hundreds of hours of different talks and I've watched him live. He was stationed in Halifax, and I've heard him taking about it. So as I read your wonderful post I heard him narrating it in my heard. It was kinda fun Aye.
Thank you. I really like Canada. It's a fun drive. Though I'm staying away from Quebec. Been to Ottawa several times. Love the buildings there. Thanks for sharing this post. Lots of fun :)

Dude this is mint. you kept coming with wicked awesome stuff, and the fact TPB made it up there is why you're a #registeredbeautician bud! Excellent job!
I must ask, how is that Titanic museum? That story absolutely fascinates me!

So good to see the beauty of your city and all the info thanks for sharing

Sir, I completly lied to you. I didn't see this, and I've now read it through a few times.
This is an amazing showcase and you've set the bar high. Very well done.

Halifax and all the NS is fucking beautiful! One day I will be free of my corporate chains and I will buy a land and get my buddy Goldenarms over sitting on my porch sipping on liquor counting our gold and silver coins. How's that sound?

Oh that sounds nice. U can also make hot beats and i can spit hot fire haha

Thanks for the tour man. I came from Ontario, surrounded by the great lakes. Not the same as the ocean though it is water...

I absolutely love Nova Scotia and it's important part in Canadian history! It's a close neighbour to my home in New Brunswick and my family have often vacationed there. The wharf in downtown Halifax is one of my favorite places to visit. Thanks for the awesome pics!

Great Post and Pic's! Spent A lot of time in Halifax back in the 90's. Got to get back there one day!

What were u doing here my friend?

Great post GA! Hey is King of Donairs still producing the sweet sauce? And is the liquor-dome still there?

🤘😜

Oh so u know of the Donair! Yes theyre both institutions still my friend

Damn! I could really use one of those :)

There has been only 1 place i have tried that came anywhere close to KOD. It was run by a guy from Halifax who snuck the recipe out... but alas, he only lasted about 1yr :(

I visited Halifax for weekend over New Years '97 -- and went back to KOD like 4 times in two days.
Mmmm, donair with sweet sause...

Yeah man they're a treat. Pairs well with being shit faced drunk lol I order Donair pizza bout once a month from kod

Donair pizza!!!? Y'arrrgh!

O how you teaze with your gold and your takeout options! Lol

Enjoyed this post very much, even with the tragedies in history mentioned. I once saw a documentary on that explosion. Really hard to bear, that things like that happen.

I have an artist friend in Muskoka, I think its not far from your area. Keep thinking about visiting her, but I'm reluctant to take that flight accross the pond... although your photos make me think again ;-)
