Hello, this is ‘City Has Soul’.
This is my last post concerning my trip to San Diego, and it is also about one of the best gems that I found there.
I passed by the main road of ‘Little Italy’ while I was heading to the restaurant, ‘Juniper & Ivy’ for my dinner reservation (check my previous post for more info). Little Itay was a very peaceful town, and I felt a very positive vibe there. There were many people, restaurants, and bars there, so much so that it almost felt as if I was attending a festival. The town was also quiet and not too noisy despite the large amount of people being there. My friend and I took a walk around the town, and we felt a pleasant sea breeze blowing from the nearby shores. It was a very beautiful summer night.

가는 곳마다 새롭고 좋았지만 가장 좋았던 보물같은 곳이 오늘 보여드리는 리틀 이태리입니다. 저번 포스트에 올렸던 ‘Juniper&Ivy’를 찾아 가는 길에 리틀 이태리 메인 길을 지나치게 되었는데 분위가 너무 좋아서 자리가 날때까지 기다리는 사이에 걷게 되었어요. 평화롭고 어딘지 들뜬 느낌의 분위기가 흘렀습니다. 아마 많은 레스토랑과 바에서 와인이며 맥주며 시켜놓고 친구들, 연인들과 대화하는 사람들 때문이었던 것 같아요. 마치 축제하는 길 같았지만 그렇게 소란스러운 곳은 아니었어요. 길을 걷는 내내 가까이에 있는 항구에서부터 기분 좋은 미풍이 불었고 다시 생각해도 행복해지는 한 여름밤이었습니다.
The next day, we decided to go there again to take some more pictures as most of the shops were closed on the previous evening, and we also wanted to try some real Italian pizza there as well. We went to Flippi’s Pizza which according to some of the locals there, had the “best pizza in town.”
다음날 샌디에고를 떠나기 전 다시 리틀 이태리를 찾았어요. 전날 문을 닫은 곳도 있어서 아쉬웠기도 했지만 진짜 이탈리아 스타일의 피자를 맛보고 싶었거든요. 그래서 찾아간 곳이 타운내에서 베스트 피자집이라는 Flippi’s pizza 라는 곳이었어요.
When you go to inside, don’t be surprised if it looks like an Italian market because they sell many important products from Italy including fine cheese, wine, pasta, and salami. Once you walk all the way towards the back of the store, you will be able to enter the restaurant inside.
일단 문 안으로 들어가면 레스토랑이 아닌 식료품점이 나와서 당황했는데 치즈, 파스타, 와인, 살라미등 이탈리아에서 온 듯한 여러 식료품을 지나 들어가니 레스토랑이 나왔습니다.
We ordered ‘the Works’ pizza as recommended to us by our server, and gosh, I am so glad that we did! Interestingly, when you order ‘the Works’ pizza you can choose between anchovies or onions as the 5th topping. We ordered the anchovies and they were excellent as they were plump, held their form nicely, and also gave off a taste of high quality olive oil. The harmony of the right amount of ingredients along with their extra delicious tomato sauce made this a pizza to remembered. We also ordered a side of their meatballs and an order of their garlic bread. Those ended up being the highlights of our meal especially when we dipped the garlic bread in the marinara sauce that came with the meatballs!
우리는 추천받은 'the Works' 라는 피자를 시켰는데요, 양파와 엔초비 옵션 중 엔초비를 골랐는데 좋은 선택이었던 것 같아요. 확실히 포인트가 되더라구요. 토마토 맛이며, 올리브 맛등 재료들의 맛이 뛰어났어요. 미트볼과 마늘빵도 주문했는데 미트볼은 고기냄새가 전혀 안나고 담백했고 토마토 소스가 정말 맛있더라구요. 마늘빵을 소스에 찍어서 먹었는데 조합이 환상적이었어요.
After we were done eating, we took a look around town and it was a much different atmosphere than when we visiting there the previous evening. The mood was even more peaceful and quiet than it was the night before.
레스토랑에서 나와 길을 조금 더 걸었는데 밤과는 또 다른 분위기더라구요. 여전히 기분 좋아지는 곳이었는데 평일이라 그런지 조용했어요. 관광객도 별로 없는 듯 했구요.
There must’ve been an airport close by because we were able to see planes landing close to us every 5 to 10 minutes. Looking back on it now, I am not sure why but we were adamant on taking close up pictures of the planes about to land. It reminded me of my fascination for planes when I was a child.
근처에 공항이 있어서 5분~10분 정도에 한번씩 비행기가 아주 낮게 날고 있었습니다. 도대체 왜였는지 모르겠지만 저와 친구는 비행기를 가까이서 찍겠다는 집착이 생겨서 찍고 더 가까이 찍고 또 찍었는데 어린시절 동네에서 친구들과 놀던 때가 생각났어요.
If you ever get the opportunity to visit San Diego I highly recommend you check out ‘Little Italy’ and experience the leisure of urban life there. I hope you enjoyed reading and seeing some of my experiences of my last travels.
