I love to tell the stories behind the needles and this is one of them. When I emigrated from Venezuela 5 years ago, I arrived in Cuba sick and with only 20 kilos in a suitcase containing my clothes and some medicines. I could not bring anything else. When I recovered, I wanted to start making handicrafts since manual arts are part of my life and a great motivation for me.

Cuando emigré de Venezuela hace 5 años, llegué a Cuba enferma y con solamente 20 kilos en una maleta contenía mi ropa y algunos medicamentos. No pude traer nada más. Cuando me recuperé, quise empezar a hacer manualidades ya que las artes manuales son parte de mi vida y una gran motivación para mí.
My mother-in-law who is a great tailor, graduated in tailoring many years ago, gave me a bag of threads and material for sewing and knitting.
Mi suegra que es una gran sastre, graduada en sastrería hace muchos años, me regaló una bolsa de hilos y material para coser y tejer.

One of the things that caught my attention, was when she told me that many of these threads were bought by her when she started working in a sewing workshop she opened in town. That was 40 years ago and she still has some of them. Like these, which are my favorite, that come on little wooden spools. They are lovely.
Una de las cosas que me llamó la atención, fue cuando me dijo que muchos de estos hilos los compró ella cuando empezó a trabajar en un taller de costura que abrió en el pueblo. Eso hace 40 años y todavía conserva algunos de ellos. Como estos, que son mis favoritos, que vienen en pequeños carretes de madera. Son encantadores.
The only thing I was missing was needles. I had a few very fine ones, but they were of poor quality, splitting or rusting. So I needed new needles and because of the pandemic and travel restrictions I had not been able to order material to work with.
My husband, baby and I live in a country town in Cuba. We are in the suburbs and it is more than 1 hour away from where the stores are. But people here invent anything to meet the needs, like this vendor who came by my house and miraculously had very good quality needles and I bought 4 for $1.
Lo único que me faltaba eran las agujas. Tenía unas cuantas muy finas, pero eran de mala calidad, se partían o se oxidaban. Así que necesitaba nuevas agujas y por la pandemia y la restricción de viajes no había podido encargar material para trabajar.
Mi esposo, mi bebé y yo vivimos en un pueblo campestre de Cuba. Estamos en los suburbios y es más de 1 hora de distancia a donde están las tiendas. Pero las personas aquí inventan cualquier cosa para suplir las necesidades, como este vendedor que pasó por mi casa y milagrosamente tenía agujas de muy buena calidad y compre 4 por 1 dólar.

I love buttons and have managed to collect several, although they are all white in color. I have some costume jewelry stones. 2 tape measures and scissors.

So I took a large box, given to me by a friend when we shared treatment at the oncology clinic, put my name on it and organized my sewing material here.

Thank you for sharing this personal story about your arrival ín Cuba and which importance your sewing kit has. THe wooden spools are lovely and its wonderful that you have them as a memory of your mother in law and that you are inspired to pick up sewing and craft as a job.

Que hermoso post Diana, yo tambien tengo mi caja, es una grandota pero esta se me rompió esta semada, es que ya no soporta tanto peroles como le dice mi mamá, es que en serio siempre guardo muchas cosas, sobre todo de reciclaje, pero siempre se le puede hayar utilidad a las cosas, las tuya se ven ordenadita y bonita 😍
Entonces necestas una caja más grande. Se me ocurre hacer un baul con una caja y papel maché, sería genial....
Se ve todo ordenado hasta que caen en manos de María Teresa, entonces se vuelve un enredo entre hilos, encajes y bebé 🤭...
