Una película de 2019
I had not gone to the movies for more than a year and I have discovered that here in Santiago de Chile, in addition to the large chain cinemas that are in shopping centers, there are also small theaters that show films that are not always premieres or the highest grossing. And the best thing about these rooms is that they are almost anywhere. Last Thursday I was walking down a street, after dinner, and a cinema appeared to me that I didn't remember seeing on that block, so I decided to go in because I missed the experience.
Tenía más de un año sin ir al cine y he descubierto que acá en Santiago de Chile, además de los cines de grandes cadenas que están en los centros comerciales, hay también salas pequeñas que proyectan películas que no siempre son estrenos ni las más taquilleras. Y lo mejor de estas salas es que están casi en cualquier parte. El jueves pasado iba caminando por una calle, después de cenar, y se me apareció un cine que no recordaba haber visto en esa cuadra, así que decidí entrar porque extrañaba la experiencia.
The film screened that day was the French film J'accuse (The Officer and the Spy) by renowned director Roman Polanski. The story that is told throughout the two hours is based on real events and is set in France at the end of the 19th century. French Captain Alfred Dreyfus, a young Jewish officer, is charged with treason for spying for Germany and sentenced to life in prison on Devil's Island in French Guiana. Among the witnesses who made this humiliation possible is Colonel Georges Picquart, in charge of leading the counterintelligence unit that discovered the spy. Some time later, Picquart is promoted and in his new position he learns that military secrets are still being passed to the Germans and begins to discover somewhat suspicious facts and characters, which lead him to think that a mistake may have been made by convicting Dreyfus.
La película que se proyectaba ese día era la cinta francesa J'accuse (El oficial y el espía) del reconocido director Roman Polanski. La historia que se cuenta a lo largo de las dos horas de duración está basada en hechos relales y se ambienta en Francia a finales del siglo XIX. El capitán francés Alfred Dreyfus, un joven oficial judío, es acusado de traición por espiar para Alemania y condenado a cadena perpetua en la Isla del Diablo en la Guayana Francesa. Entre los testigos que hicieron posible esta humillación se encuentra el coronel Georges Picquart, encargado de liderar la unidad de contrainteligencia que descubrió al espía. Un tiempo después, Picquart es ascendido y en su nuevo cargo se entera de que se siguen pasando secretos militares a los alemanes y comienza a descubrir hechos y personajes un tanto sospechosos, que lo inclinan a pensar que pudo haberse cometido una equivocación al condenar a Dreyfus.
Picquart will then enter a dangerous labyrinth of lies and corruption, endangering his honor and his life, all to try to redress what he considers an error of justice and to defend the truth to the last consequences.
Picquart entonces se adentrará en un peligroso laberinto de mentiras y corrupción, poniendo en peligro su honor y su vida, todo por intentar resarcir lo que considera un error de la justicia y por defender la verdad hasta las últimas consecuencias.
Somehow, the officer becomes obsessed with saving Dreyfus. With the same obstinacy that the Javert of Les Misérables persecuted Jean Valjean to put him behind bars, Picquart requests reviews of evidence, asks that the trial be resumed, that it be held again and goes to his superiors with documentary support to release a man he believes is innocent. To add a touch of force to the dilemma, the officer does not sympathize with the Jews and Dreyfus is one, so many criticize him for precisely that. And in the same way that prisoner 24601 evades Javert at every approach, the members of the high command and French justice evade Picquart's requests and in a new trial, as flawed as the first, they once again convict Dreyfus, not because they believe him guilty but because they are not going to admit that the French defense and justice system made a mistake. They would lose the credibility and trust of a nation that is going through a time of international tension and for them that is worth more than the life of a man.
De alguna forma, el oficial se obsesiona con salvar a Dreyfus. Con la misma obstinación que el Javert de Les Misérables perseguía a Jean Valjean para ponerlo tras las rejas, Picquart solicita revisiones de pruebas, pide que se retome el juicio, que se celebre de nuevo y acude a sus superiores con respaldo documental para que liberen a un hombre que él cree es inocente. Para ponerle un toque más de fuerza al dilema, el oficial no simpatiza con los judíos y Dreyfus es uno, así que muchos lo critican precisamente por eso. Y de la misma forma que el prisionero 24601 evade a Javert a cada aproximación, los miembros del alto mando y de la justicia francesa evaden las peticiones de Picquart y en un nuevo juicio, tan viciado como el primero, vuelven a condenar a Dreyfus, no porque lo crean culpable sino porque no van a admitir que el sistema de defensa y justicia francés cometió un error. Perderían la credibilidad y confianza de una nación que atraviesa una época de tensión internacional y para ellos eso vale más que la vida de un hombre.
Polanski was criticized for the making of this film for issues that have to do with his personal history and his way of capturing certain dilemmas on film. I do not know those issues and I am not so aware of his biography as to understand the origin of these criticisms. Seeing the film for what it is, a fictional story (although it is based on real events, it is a fictional product), I think it is a good story and it is well told. The script is good, the scenography, the costumes, the performances too, especially that of Jean Dujardin (Picquart) who supports practically all the weight of the plot; Despite the fact that it is about the injustice committed against Dreyfus, the story centers on the officer who helped convict him and then tried to absolve him.
Polanski fue criticado por la realización de esta película por temas que tienen que ver con su historia personal y su manera de plasmar ciertos dilemas en la cinta. Desconozco esos temas y no estoy tan enterado de su biografía como para comprender el origen de esas críticas. Viendo la película como lo que es, una historia de ficción (aunque se base en hechos reales, es un producto ficticio), creo que es una buena historia y está bien contada. El guión es bueno, la escenografía, el vestuario, las actuaciones también, en especial la de Jean Dujardin (Picquart) quien soporta prácticamente todo el peso de la trama; a pesar de que se trata de la injusticia cometida contra Dreyfus, la historia se centra en el oficial que ayudó a condenarlo y luego intentó absolverlo.
Viewers will sympathize with Picquart's efforts to try to make amends for error and to defend two supreme values above his honor: justice and truth. Although the context of this drama is the army in times of political tension, in reality it is a legal triller with flawed justice, like To kill a mockingbird or The trial of the Chicago 7, films that I also recommend.
Los espectadores simpatizarán con los esfuerzos de Picquart por intentar enmendar el error y por defender dos valores supremos por encima de su honor: la justicia y la verdad. Aunque el contexto de este drama sea el ejército en tiempos de tensión política, en realidad es un triller legal con justicia viciada, como To kill a mockingbird o The trial of the Chicago 7, películas que también recomiendo.
Finally, as some of you may know, the title of the film refers to a text by the writer Émile Zola in favor of Captain Alfred Dreyfus, published in the form of an open letter to the President of France Félix Faure in the newspaper L'Aurore on 13 January 1898 on its front page. Someone had to tell this story to the public so that the injustice that was being committed was known and that was what Zola did, receiving death threats and being sentenced to exile.
Finalmente, como algunos de ustedes sabrán, el título de la película hace referencia a un texto del escritor Émile Zola en favor del capitán Alfred Dreyfus, publicado en forma de carta abierta al presidente de Francia Félix Faure en el diario L'Aurore el 13 de enero de 1898 en su primera plana. Alguien tenía que contar esta historia al público para que se conociera la injusticia que se estaba cometiendo y eso hizo Zola, recibiendo por ello amenazas de muerte y siendo condenado al exilio.
It's an ideal film for those who like stories that pit the weak against the powerful, the individual against the system, and those who enjoy stories of redemption. However, if they expect a happy ending and a triumph of the truth over corruption, they may not get everything they want. However, I think it is a very well made film and although it is not at the level of The pianist, I think it is a good reference to know or continue discovering the work of Roman Polanski. If you like and have time, also look for the text of Zola and you will see that many of the failures of our current system go back to the past, why do we continue to fight against the same demons?
Es una película ideal para quienes gustan de las historias que enfrentan a los débiles contra los poderosos, al individuo contra el sistema, y a quienes disfrutan las historias de redención. Sin embargo, si esperan un final feliz y un triunfo de la verdad sobre la corrupción, podrían no obtener todo lo que buscan. No obstante creo que es una película muy bien realizada y aunque no esté a la altura de The pianist, creo que es buena referencia para conocer o seguir descubriendo la obra de Roman Polanski. Si gustan y tienen tiempo, busquen también el texto de Zola y verán que muchas de las fallas de nuestro sistema actual se remontan al pasado, ¿por qué seguimos luchando contra los mismo demonios?
Excelente reseña. Polanski es un gran creador, un poco excéntrico y siempre se las ingeniado para estar en la mira de los armadores de escándalo. Leo lo que mencionas sobre esas salas de cine no comercial y pienso que esa es una de las cosas que hemos perdido. Hasta en una ciudad pequeña como Maracay teníamos dos salas de ese tipo,donde se podían ver películas muy buenas, ojalá vengan tiempos mejores. Cuídate. Que estés bien. No es el mejor film de Polanski , pero es un buen film, lo enmarcas como un thriller legal, coincido con eso.
Lo del caso Polanski , bueno, ya la vida entera de este cineasta sera algún día una película. Lo que hizo en décadas pasadas, estuvo mal, en caso de que sea cierto, pero el gobierno americano todavía no le perdona que se escabullera en su narices. Yo intento separar la vida privada de los cineastas y actores de su arte. Hasta la chica ( ahora una señora mayor) dijo que lo perdonaba y que debían olvidarse de eso.
Yo seguiré disfrutando de su cine, que me encanta.
Coincido con ese intento de separar el arte y los artistas. La verdad es que no conozco mucho de su biografía, pero entiendo que ha sido bastante polémica. Igualmente, me falta ver algunas otras de sus películas. Gracias por leerme y comentar. Saludos.
