A peaceful visit to the Novodevichy Cemetery in Moscow

in Worldmappin8 months ago (edited)

Hello people and pinmapplers!

We are approaching those somewhat dark and even terrifying Halloween dates, and we already know the theme. So inspired by the decorations and costumes of these days, I wanted to share with you an interesting visit that I highly recommend if you go to Moscow, Russia.

There is a large complex, in which there is a park, a lake, a monastery (an architectural complex actually which I will also share about soon) and a famous cemetery.
I say famous cemetery because it is the most popular in Moscow and very visited by tourists. Because there is a cemeteries tourism, because some of them over the world are beautiful and bucolic, with elegant sculptures and names on the tombstones of illustrious people. That happens as well at the Novodevichy Cemetery.

We walked through the park, visited the other areas and entered the cemetery where very important people of Russia are certainly buried, such as soviet learders Gorbachev and his wife, Stalin's wife, Kropotkin, Nikita Khrushchev and other politicians, also military or soldiers.

But Russia has given a lot of culture and many geniuses to the world so we will also see the names of famous artists, writers, musicians, painters, engineers, architects, astronauts, dancers...
(for example, writers like Gogol, Pushkin and his wife, or Mijaíl Bulgákov who wrote "The Master and Margarita", musicians like Chéjov or Rostropóvich, etc.) More here on the list of Wikipedia
What stands out most is that each tomb is different, with different styles, letters and decorations. Sculptures that some could well be in a museum, and others clearly show us which people are in there, or what remains of them.

There are guides who explain during the tour who the best-known personalities are, perhaps, and the history of many others, I do not remember all of them, nor all the names, I read some inscribed on the tombstones, with the little I know of the Cyrillic alphabet and I leave imagining the lives of those people who now have such a pleasant place to rest and where they are constantly visited, where they are honored again with each person who stops to contemplate that small work of art that represents them, and with each photograph that is taken.

And the tribute is continuous, to so many people, the route is winding but peaceful, and it is also general, not only to great personalities but also to the country itself and its flag (well this is the grave of Boris Yeltsin, a former president of Russia).

While we continue wandering around a silent environment, full of vegetation and a multitude of small beautiful works of art, we head towards the exit or entrance, to the place that connects with another spectacular part that I will soon share (the monastery), where I think I took some of photographs that I liked the most, absolutely ones of my favorites.

So for now, enjoy with peace but also with joy this holiday that connects us with death but also with life, because life is full of beautiful things, even in a Russian cemetery.

Happy Halloween

Hi bro, didn’t come talk to you for a while, hope everything is doing good.

When talking about cemetery, your post recall my memory of 2013 while I was attending the activities from high school reunion event which is guiding us to visit the cemetery in Hong Kong, need to go check my old hard disk to see if the images still there

Hello!!! How are you? Thanks all is fine hope also for you.
About cemeteries there are some which are really interesting like in Paris, Viena, Sao Paulo... and sure more... (I shared in the past another smaller but really bucolic). The thing is that some still not visited and others yes but I didn't take photos at that time!
Curiously cemeteries tourism is somehow popular (for some people) and surprisingly we find very interesting places like this one or maybe the cemetery of HK if you can find some images 😉 Definitively interesting to discover some others!

Aaaaaaaaaah fuiste a Rusia! Que emoción! :D
