Today I'm not in my house as I usually am. I'm taking care of my grandparents. After helping with lunch and washing the dishes I've set a goal to write for about 10 or 15 minutes. I'm not an expert writer, but I thought I might have something interesting to share with the community.
What could I write about?
- Video Games?
- Mormonism?
- Music?
- Mental Health?
- Minimalism?
- Optimistic Nihilism?
There are a lot of topics but sometimes is hard for me to gather the ideas and focus in only one thing. I've always been the kind of person that needs to have almost all figured out to take action. If something doesn't motivates me enough I might not engage.
This exercise has put me out of my confort zone, first of all English is not my native language and second I started writing without a clear objective.
I've decided to share an experience that changed my life, maybe not for the better but it took me on this path that I'm currently enjoying a lot.
On May of 2009 I was working with m y mother and a group of enthusiast people on a Network Marketing Company called 4Life. I have been developing this business since January 2008. For those of you that are not familiar with the concept, Network Marketing is a profession or activity where you promote a business by either selling the product and/or enrolling people on the business below you so you can have a percentage from their sales. It is also known as Multi Level Marketing and many times confused as Pyramid Schemes or Ponzi Schemes (to be honest there are some opportunities that are 100% scam).
We were very happy with this business, even though we have not achieved the financial results, but the product was awesome and had helped us and a lot of people. As most businesses of this type in order to become more successful and to convinced yourself and another about the opportunity you have to attend Conventions. It was convention time and we traveled form Cuernavaca, Morelos (Mexico) all the way to Orlando, Florida on car. It was a 2 and half day trip and we crossed the border on during the famous Mexican Flu (Influenza H1N1) that according to many people was a complete made up thing to distract the people.
We arrived to Orlando and attended this great event. It was interesting, entertaining, emotional, funny, exhausting, stressing and boring at the same time. We even went to Disney World one day and we had a blast. Until then I didn't know that this trip would set my life on a very weird course.
We learned a lot of things and came back home very motivated. At the end this kind of events can change your life. But the lack of sleep, the intense emotions and the motivation to start working took a huge toll on me. I've had a couple of mental breakdowns, if you can call them that way, in my life before this trip. I didn't skip my medicine but I still had another Hypomanic Episode. This one was so severe that I had to be hospitalized.
Before telling you my adventures in the psychiatric hospital I want to tell you some of the symptoms I've had that belong to Hypomania:
- Talk, talk, talk until you annoy everyone.
- Insomnia and a lots and lots of Energy.
- Motivations to do everything and to make businesses.
- Intense flow of ideas driven by a creative impulse.
- More empathy with other people and a need to help people.
There are other classic syptoms but this were the ones that affected me the more.
So we got back to Mexico and on the way back home my mother knew that something was happening to me. After spending two or three day we decided to go to the hospital and I was accepted. My treatment began.
On my first day on the hospital I met a very dear friend who was also a patient. We became instant friends. He was a 10 years older than me and had been on the hospital several times. We had almost the same problem and our minds were working on the same frequency. The hospital was like 5 star hotel for me, at least for the first few days, after that the medication starts kicking in and you are "stoned" all day, but not on a good way... After I broke a sink they decided to keep me more medicated so it started to become very annoying to be in the hospital. I was sleepy all day but couldn't take a nap and I was woken up at 7:00 a.m. for breakfast.
I finally got out of the hospital after more the one month. My friend got out a couple of weeks before me, but we stayed in touch.
Going forward almost 4 years, this friend invited me to the Mormon Church. He had been a member for some years and even though he was not very active I decided to join. Many of the peoplw that I worked with in 4Life were Mormons and also the owners of the company were members of that religion so I though ti could be a good opportunit for me to grow as a person.
I spent 3 years of my life on that Church, I almost got married to one girl, I did a tremendous work on my genealogical tree, I made many friends, I participated on very weird rituals I even got a New Name. Not all was bad but at the end, it was NOT true.
This was parto of my story and what has made me who I am. At the end it was not a waste of time, it was something that I had to live. Now I'm very happy, I'm on a very different place and I've learned that I don't need a religion or god to be happy. I'm engaged to a very talented, beautiful and amazing person that loved me for who I am and helps me become a better person.
Oh, I've written more than 1,000 words. I think it took more time than expected. I hope you liked it. This is a very different post of what I use to post. Next week I will keep sharing posts about video games, art, music and such.
Until next time!
