Be careful: Scammers on Discord!

image.png

I just wanted to create a short blog to warn you about scammers on Discord.
A lot of you that have been active in different Hive related Discord servers probably have experienced bots from scammers reacting on questions posed in the Discord servers.

But today I experienced something different which I'd like to warn you for. I received a friend request from an unknown user. I work in the IT security field, so I'm quite distrustful. I think that’s professional deformation. But it comes in handy sometimes.

This morning I received a friend request from a certain Jordan.
I didn't recognize the name as a hiver, but curious as I am, I accepted the request.
Jordan, with ADMIN in his avatar asked me if I had any issues and if I needed some assistance... .how nice!
I played stupid to see what the next

image.png

When I told him I was fine, he immediately told me I needed to migrate my wallet to 'the system portal'? to avoid any further issues (Despite the fact that I had just told him I had no issues).
I played stupid and asked how I would do that and within a minute I received a link I had to click with a procedure to follow.
If I would have followed it, my account would probably be hacked.

Be aware!

Since this guy was in the Official Hive Discord I reported it and he was banned.

But then, tonight I received another friend request. I must be very popular. This it was someone with the Hive logo as avatar and the name of the account was Hive Support.
Ans if you ask yourself; is there an official Hive Support account 😂
There isn't!!!!
I haven't received a reply from the account yet, but this confident_starfish does smell phishy!

I think a lot of you are quite aware of the scammer that are out for your Hive keys to witdraw all the funds from your wallet, but every now and then I see a cry for help in the Hive Discord Server of somebody that has fallen victim to these scammer, so I thought it wouldn't hurt to make this blog to create some more awareness.

Remember!

  • There is no official Hive Support account!
  • Never! I repeat: Never! share your Hive keys.
  • If you lose your keys, you lose your account!
  • Never make rushed decisions, especially when it's concerns your account.
  • Scammer often create fear (you lose access) and urgency (you should act immediately).
  • Pause, think, and if in doubt, ask someone you trust through a trusted channel.

Or rather: Scammers are everywhere.

Not your keys, not your crypto.

Distributing powerful feedback is going to have additional value.

It's good that you shared this. People shouldn't be falling for this but well, they do. So, it's necessary to bring such posts to enlighten.

Oh man it boggles me how people would fall for this shit.

And Hive Support? Forgive me whilst I fall about laughing my absolute ass off. I'm more likely to believe in unicorns.

While hive may not have support, some projects on hive do. For instance, you can go to a discord channel to ask a question to hive engine devs. If you go there panicked asking a question about some transaction that seems to have just disappeared, guess who answers first? Hint: It's highly unlikely to be a hive engine dev. I just don't bother to use discord anymore. I never much cared for it anyway.

I don't like Discord either, but there are a couple of people there I know will help out if they can. I find Peakd pretty good - they will get back to you eventually if I keep tagging them. I guess they have real lives as well.

Just to be clear, my point isn't that there aren't people willing to help, it's that no matter how many willing people there are, chances are, a scammer or bot will be there to "help" you first. For newbies looking for help, this isn't always going to be obvious.

Thanks for the reminder. And thanks for the human brain.

This is not just them, once I had some queries with Actifit Developers and I asked my question in their discord, and scammer appear there and told me to contact his in his chat. I tagged the Dev and Mod there and ask if the person is real, but they said they removed that scammer.

Just sharing my experience I have faced with these scammers. They're everywhere.

Indeed. These bots reply automatically when you ask a question in certain Discord channels.

I have seen bots on Telegram which use commands to remove the spam/targeted messages instantly, doesn't Discord have any of that kind bot?

Good morning could you lend me some URLs of those telegram bot helpers that eliminate spam?
Thanks 😊👍

Nowadays I am using Discord briefly and most of my interaction is on the blockchain, like on Hive with users that have rather higher reputation. Avoiding noise and danger.
