Dom Dom: All you can eat Korean style BBQ joint in Da Nang

in ASEAN HIVE COMMUNITY10 months ago

I wrote "Korean style" instead of just Korean BBQ because this place is, by their own admission, not even on the same level as a genuine Korean BBQ joint. It couldn't possibly be because it is an all you can eat establishment all for one price. Korean BBQ places tend to have you order by the 100 or 500 grams of premium grade meats of mostly pork and steak. This place has a whole mix of things and you pay just one price regardless of how much of it you have.

In many ways I kind of prefer this sort of establishment because "real" Korean BBQ joints here in Da Nang can get out of control as far as the price is concerned pretty quickly.

Dom Dom was a surprise to me and not a place I would have chosen to go to on my own. It was a pal's birthday and I was invited so I went!

They could have done a little bit of work on their neon

You go in, you sit down, you try to make sense out of the poorly translated menu and then you order as much of it as you want. I would recommend starting small because since it is quite difficult to tell what something actually is based on the menu, there is a chance you could end up with something that you don't actually like. Even though it is not against the rules, it is frowned upon to order things and then not eat them. You can return full plates of uncooked food but once it hits the grill, you are expected to eat it.

It's completed on your own or family-style or whatever you want to call this, but each table has a charcoal pit in the middle with grills on top of it. They periodically come out and change the grill when it gets too scummy. In many genuine Korean restaurants they have a trough of sorts so that the juices stay with the meat a bit better, but this place went a different direction for some reason. I don't know what that reason was but it seems to work. One advantage of this is that everyone gets to take part in the prep of the food. Another benefit is that if you know anything about meat you can eyeball the quality of the cuts they give you before you cook them, or even send them back if you want to be a fussy-britches.

The restaurant is relatively enormous and this is just the 2nd floor which we reserved almost all of for our rather large group. You can expect this place to be quite busy as it remains popular with the Vietnamese moreso than foreigners who normally don't even know it exists.

it's difficult to tell from this picture but we actually did end up packing the place and everyone had a great time. Our group of friends are all just really terrible when it comes to punctuality. We ended up nearly drinking the place dry out of beers and by the time we were done the per-person cost ended up being around $20 a head including drinks. That might not seem like a great deal depending on where you live in the world but if we had tried to have the same experience at a "real" Korean BBQ place it would have easily cost 2-3 times that much.

This place isn't very accommodating to non Vietnamese speakers but honestly, since you don't really know what you are going to get anyway and it is fixed price, it doesn't really matter all that much. For a different experience than what you would normally get in this rather touristy part of Da Nang, I think it is a great way to spend an evening. No reservations are required but on weekends this place gets really busy.

here is the location if you are staying in the tourist part of town, which you almost certainly will be if you visit or live here, it isn't very far away from where you likely live anyway.

Sounds great and more about having a good time on a decent budget. It is not surprising the locals love it as it is affordable. They say eat where the locals eat as they know and this is a good example of that. I have always wanted to try a Korean Barbecue joint due to it allowing you to try so many different dishes.

eat where the locals eat is so true. When I walk into a place and it is filled entirely with foreigners, I know I am in a tourist trap.

This is a perfect place for doing a food trip. There many kinds of foods can be choose according to our likeness.
