Gracias a la comunidad de PukuMundo por brindar esta valiosa oportunidad de participar nuevamente en el PukuConcurso "La Voz Cantante", Canto a Capella - Semana No. 2. les obsequio un canto de Calipso del pueblo del Callao, ubicado al Sur del Estado Bolívar, titulado Children of the soil (Niños de la Tierra) del Folclor Antillano.
Siento el compromiso de hablar sobre nuestra diversidad musical y de la tradición en Venezuela, por eso hoy hablar de Calipso es un privilegio, ya que es importante que se conozca en el mundo entero, desde principios del año 1853 ya conocía el asentamiento más importante en el Estado Bolívar y se sabía de esta población debido a las minas de oro existentes en ese territorio. Muchos trabajadores llegaron desde las Antillas al pueblo del Callao, se mezclaron los idiomas, cultura, arte, gastronomía de ingleses, franceses y españoles, algunos de Haití, San Martín, Trinidad y Tobago, entre otros.
Surgió la música hecho calipso, presente siempre la influencia afrovenezolana con la ejecución de los tambores bumbac, generalmente son tres que van alternando con sus variaciones rítmicas, el cuatro venezolano, canto, cencerros, campanas, pitos alternando con la danza, siempre presente con personajes tan importantes como los diablos, fantasías, madamas y medio pinto que van en comparsa por las calles del pueblo en época de carnaval.
Se cuentan historias en el Callao de mujeres de gran carácter que se encargaron de mantener las tradiciones y no dejar morir las celebraciones del Carnaval, mujeres como la Madamas, Popo Coram, personaje de principal importancia en las historias de la música y el Carnaval.
Hay muchas figuras emblemáticas en la historia del Calipso como Isidora Agnes, Lourdes Basanta y Cleotilde Billings que fue la Cultora que trajo la manifestación a Caracas por los años 1980, pude compartir con ella en los Talleres de Cultura Popular de la Fundación Bigott en Zona Rental en la ciudad capital. Por otra parte, Caballeros del CALIPSO como Carlo Small, Kenton St. Bernard, Luis Giraud y muchos más.
Hoy día se ven por las calles del Callao bandas de CALIPSO con instrumentos tradicionales pero al mismo tiempo, instrumentos electrónicos y de viento metal, cantados en español que ya casi desplaza al antiguo patuá.
Aquí les dejo la letra de CHildren of they soil en idioma Patois con su respectiva traducción que sería Niños de la tierra, eleven sus voces en armonía, alcen sus voces y digan, exclama, Calipso del Callao.

Thanks to the PukuMundo community for providing this valuable opportunity to participate again in the PukuConcurso "La Voz Cantante", Canto a Capella - Week No. 2. I give you a Calypso song from the town of Callao, located south of Bolivar State, entitled Children of the Soil (Children of the Soil) from the Antillean Folklore.
I feel the commitment to talk about our musical diversity and tradition in Venezuela, that is why today to talk about Calypso is a privilege, since it is important that it is known throughout the world, since the beginning of the year 1853 I already knew the most important settlement in the State of Bolivar and it was known about this population due to the gold mines existing in that territory. Many workers arrived from the Antilles to the town of Callao, mixing the languages, culture, art and gastronomy of the English, French and Spanish, some from Haiti, St. Martin, Trinidad and Tobago, among others.
The music made calypso emerged, always present the Afro-Venezuelan influence with the execution of the bumbac drums, usually three that alternate with their rhythmic variations, the Venezuelan cuatro, singing, cowbells, bells, whistles alternating with the dance, always present with important characters such as devils, fantasies, madams and half pinto that go in procession through the streets of the town at carnival time.
Stories are told in Callao of women of great character who were in charge of maintaining the traditions and not let the Carnival celebrations die, women like the Madamas, Popo Coram, a character of main importance in the stories of music and Carnival.
There are many emblematic figures in the history of Calypso as Isidora Agnes, Lourdes Basanta and Cleotilde Billings who was the Cultora who brought the event to Caracas in the 1980s, I was able to share with her in the Popular Culture Workshops of the Bigott Foundation in Zona Rental in the capital city.
