Chana Dal (Split chickpea)

Hello friends,

I hope you all are well, and I trust you're in good spirits. Today, I am sharing a very delicious recipe with you, which is full of flavor and is known as "Chana Dal" (Split Chickpea). For this, I will need the following ingredients:

Ingredients:

  1. 1 cup chana dal (split chickpeas)
  2. 3 cups water
  3. 2 small onions, finely chopped
  4. 2 green chilies, chopped (adjust according to taste)
  5. 1 tablespoon ginger-garlic paste

Spices:

  1. 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  2. 1 teaspoon red chili powder (adjust according to taste)
  3. 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  4. A pinch of asafoetida (hing)
  5. 1 teaspoon garam masala
  6. Salt to taste
  7. Chopped coriander leaves for garnishing
  8. 2 tablespoons oil or ghee

Method:

  1. Wash the chana dal thoroughly under running water until the water runs clear. Soak it in water for approximately 30 minutes.

  2. After rinsing the soaked dal, add it to a pressure cooker along with 3 cups of water, turmeric powder, and a little salt. Pressure cook for about 4-5 whistles or until the dal is soft and well-cooked.

  1. Heat oil or ghee in a separate pan. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter.
  2. Add finely chopped onions and sauté them until they turn golden brown.

  1. Incorporate ginger-garlic paste and chopped green chilies. Sauté for about a minute until the raw smell disappears.

  2. Add the chopped tomatoes and cook until they become soft and the oil starts to separate.

  3. Add red chili powder, garam masala, and a pinch of asafoetida. Mix well.

  4. Introduce the cooked chana dal into the pan and combine everything. Adjust salt and spices to your taste.

  1. Allow the dal to simmer for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. If it's too thick, you can add a little warm water.

  2. Garnish with chopped coriander leaves and enjoy the flavorful chana dal with rice or papdi.
