Getting Lost in the Forest

in Wednesday Walk2 years ago

This #Wednesdaywalk brings us to New York State USA, to a forest located close to the small town of Ellicottville.

My wife and I went hiking with our dog there one day some months back and had a lot of fun despite getting lost in the forest. Near the end of the walk it was a major struggle to find our car again. But you know how things go sometimes - you just have to roll with the punches; make due with what you got; or some other cliché that actually works in this case.

We didn't have a phone data plan for the US at the time because our visit was only for a few days and it didn't warrant spending the extra money one. Before the hike we had to download the maps we needed and we couldn't check our GPS location once we left the cottage we were staying at.

The path we took for the hike did a large circle and crossed the road in two different spots along the way. The map we were using was very basic too and we got a bit discombobulated on where we were at times. When we hit the road the second time we decided to take it back to the car and didn't realize that what we were actually supposed to cross the road and find the path on the other side and continue in the woods until it looped back around in a full circle.

This actually happened to someone else as well, a woman we ran into that was hiking alone with her dog. She got picked up by her group in a car pretty early on though and we kept walking down the same road thinking that we were going to run into our car pretty soon.

The problem was that there were other roads and intersections in the forest that crossed over ours, and we started making wrong turns along the way without realizing it.

Eventually we sorted it out by turning on our data and just paying the $14 daily rate to be able to open the map again and problem solve our location. We found that we had to turn back around and go back to where we came from, a move that luckily only wasted about 15 minutes of our time.

The hike was pretty cool though with a few neat spots to see along the way.

20240519_123143.jpg

There were some rocky cliffs and some large rock formations that made things a little more interesting than just the usual tree covered paths.

20240519_130749.jpg

We only ran into a few other hikers so we let the dog walk off leash for the majority of the hike.

I liked these spiky green plants on the ground. I don't know what they are called but they looked like little evergreen trees that were only a few centimeters tall.

I also saw a millipede walking along a rock and that was the first time I'd ever seen one in the wild before.

That was the only hike that we've done this year so far and all and all it was pretty good, even despite getting lost.

Well, thats it for now. Until next time, thanks for stopping by.

Awesome walk and hike! Similar situation happened to my fiancé and me a while ago, planned the route but somehow got lost, but here I am typing this comment so we made it! Awesome photographs and I am really jealous of the beauty you experienced! Keep well and safe hiking!

Yeah it can happen pretty easily, especially when you don't have data for your phone to look at a map. 😂

Glad you guys made it out!

For sure! Our problem was that we hiked out of any signal, so very similar to no data! haha. Thanks and keep well!

Oh, I see. Yes very similar situation indeed and hard to plan for.

Luckily we both made it out safely! Let us hope for safe travels. Keep well, my friend.

I agree 💯
Thanks! you too

so beautiful green and lush

Thanks for joining the Wednesday Walk :)
Have a great day :)

Yeah we have been getting a lot of rain this year so everything is staying very green.

It was a pretty area, but it's a terrifying feeling to be lost, especially if time is against you. Also, you never know what wild animals might appear in those regions, right? I'm glad it worked out ok, cos I imagine the dog would be frustrated if there was further delay.
That long worm made me jump!🤦‍♀

Yeah I did start to get a bit nervous after a while, once I realized that we weren't on the road that we thought we were on. It's was a confusing moment.

Yeah the millipede is sort of snake like in its look. Sorry

Ah, yes, the nice part I always warn people visiting the US who stop in NYC first, the rest of the country isn't that filthy!

Lol that's good advice. Yeah the woods were quite nice. Beautiful nature

Getting lost like that in the woods (it hasn't happened to me but) must be a bit desperate. I recommend downloading an app like Maps.Me, which allows you to download a map of the region where you are locally and geolocates you even when you don't have internet.

In my country it is used a lot due to poor internet connection.

OK that's really good to know. I've never heard of the app but it sounds like a good resource. Thanks for the tip! 👍

This is a very beautiful place to walk, it is a way to give well-being to the mind and body, I could even consider it somewhat medicinal. I also loved your photos @leaky20
Have a great day my friend :)

You're right! There is something medicinal about being in nature. I agree!

😊❤️🌱

The rocks covered by moss look so interesting!

They definitely gave the woods an enchanted forest vibe I'd say.

Wow amazing.... the reality in this photography really amazes me, as if comfort is there.... Awesome bro 🙏

Glad you liked the photos!

Thank you!

Nature has those surprises, like seeing the millipede for the first time! Makes me want to go on a hike with my friends and explore more, too.

Hiking can be very rewarding in a lot of ways

Love the millipede! Looks like a great walk, apart from the getting lost bit!

Yeah the millipede was pretty cool. I've never seen one before. Interesting little creature
