Is there a positive side about the military life?
I guess this depends on every person and how they want to see things. It's just all about how you want to walk through life. For me, there's always a positive side about everything. It's just about the perspective. Regarding the military life I know there are a lot of bad sides. I mean for one, as a military wife, you never know when your husband gets a call that he has to leave and go somewhere. And then you sit there, probably far away from your family in a foreign country or city, hoping that your husband will make it back. Sometimes I feel like as long as you are in the military you belong to someone else. Like you're losing your rights. If you get an assignment then there's nothing you can do about it. You signed a contract and for that time frame you've to deal with whatever comes your way. But of course it has a lot of benefits too. If you're willing to get information and help then there's a huge support system for almost everything.

Gibt es auch eine positive Seite im Militärleben?
Ich denke, das hängt von jeder Person selbst ab und davon, wie sie die Dinge sehen will. Jeder geht anders durch's Leben. Für mich gibt es immer eine positive Seite. Es geht nur um die Perspektive. Was das Militärleben betrifft, so weiß ich, dass es viele Schattenseiten gibt. Zum einen weiss ich nie, wann mein Mann einen Anruf bekommt, dass sie ihn irgendwo hinschicken. Allein dieses Jahr, wie oft hiess es, das Krieg ausbrechen wird zwischen USA und Russland, Japan oder irgendein anderes Land, mit dem sich Amerika angelegt hat. Und dann sitzt du dort, wahrscheinlich weit weg von deiner Familie in einem fremden Land oder einer Stadt, und kannst nur hoffen, dass dein Ehemann wieder zurückkommen wird. Manchmal fühlt es sich auch so an, als ob du deine Rechte abgegeben hast und einfach dem Militär gehörst. Aber natürlich hat es auch viele Vorteile und auf die will ich heute eingehen ;) Es gibt ein riesiges Support-System für fast alles, man muss sich nur richtig informieren.
When I moved to the states
... everything was new to me. Not only the country, people, and language but also the military life. I wanted to have a good start and tried everything that I won't be bored and alone and start to miss home. I looked up all the stuff the military offered for family members. And there was a lot for me to do.
- I signed up for an English class
The class was called 'English is my second language' and was especially for foreign spouses to help them with their English. Even though it didn't help me with my English, I got to know a lot of girls who were in the same situation like me and it already gave me something to do.
- After that I signed up for the Spanish class
Since we're right next to the Mexican boarder they offered a free Spanish class. And again I met new people and I could improve my Spanish.
- I started volunteering
They helped me with all the information I needed and showed all kind of different work places where they need people. I filled out an application with them and weeks later I started to volunteer at a homeless shelter.

Als ich in die Staaten gezogen bin
... war alles neu für mich. Nicht nur das Land, die Leute und Sprache, sondern auch das Militärleben. Ich wollte einen guten Start haben und probierte alles aus, dass mir ja nicht langweilig wird und ich Heimweh bekomme. Ich hab nachgeschaut, was das Militär fuer Familienmitgliedern alles anbietet. Und es gab viel für mich zu tun.
- Ich habe mich für einen Englischkurs angemeldet
Die Klasse wurde "Englisch ist meine zweite Sprache" genannt. Obwohl es mir jetzt mit meinem Englisch nicht wirklich geholfen hat, habe ich viele Mädels kennengelernt, die in einer aehnlichen Situation waren wie ich und ausserdem hat es mir schon etwas zu tun gegeben. Zudem war der Kurs kostenlos.
- Danach habe ich mich für die Spanischklasse angemeldet
Da wir direkt neben der mexikanischen Grenze sind, boten sie eine kostenlose Spanischklasse an. Und wieder traf ich neue Leute und ich konnte mein Spanisch verbessern.
- Ich habe mit ehrenamtlicher Arbeit angefangen
Sie halfen mir mit allen Informationen, die ich brauchte, und zeigten alle Arten von Arbeitsplätzen, an denen sie ehrenamtliche Arbeiter brauchen. Ich füllte diverse Bewerbungen aus und Wochen später fing ich an, in einem Obdachlosenheim zu arbeiten.
- Sportliche Aktivitaeten
In der Kaserne gibt es verschiedene Fitnessstudios, die man kostenlos benutzen darf. Auch Kurse werden angeboten, die nur 3 Dollar kosten. Auch das alles habe ich ausgenutzt und habe mit Yoga angefangen.
Marriage Retreat
Every now and then they offer a getaway for married couples. You spend two nights in a hotel and during the day you attend a class where you learn all kind of stuff about marriage. There's always a different topic. We attended one last year when I came here. My husband had to held a speech too so it was also work time for him. This week we will go again but he won't have to work. I'm really looking forward to it.
Ever since I'm pregnant
They offer so many baby classes and try to support you with information wherever they can.
We signed up for a child birth class, breast feeding class, infant care class and a baby boot camp. There are just so many classes they're offering! My husband just wanted to take advantage of all of them :)
The craziest thing we did was getting a practice baby! We still have the baby right now and give her back tomorrow. I will make another post about this experience.

Ehe 'Seminar'
Hin und wieder bieten sie einen Kurztrip für Ehepaare an. Man verbringt zwei Nächte in einem Hotel und während des Tages besucht man 'ne Klasse, in der man alles moegliche ueber das Eheleben lernt und wie man es verbessern kann. Es gibt immer ein anderes Thema. Ich hab' letztes Jahr bei einem teilgenommen, da auch mein Mann dort arbeiten musste und selbst den Kurs halten musste. Diese Woche werden wir wieder gehen, aber diesmal wird er nicht arbeiten müssen. Ich freue mich schon sehr darauf :) Und auch dieses Programm ist kostenlos.
Seit dem ich schwanger bin
Sie bieten so viele Baby-Klassen an und versuchen, dich durch Informationsklassen zu unterstützen.
Wir haben uns für einen Geburtskurs, einen Stillkurs und einen Säuglingskurs sowie ein Baby-Boot-Camp angemeldet. Es gibt wirklich so viele Klassen, die sie anbieten! Mein Mann wollte einfach alles ausnutzen :)
Das Verrückteste, was wir gemacht haben, war definitv ein Übungsbaby mit nach Hause zu nehmen! Momentan haben immer noch das Baby und geben es morgen zurück. Ich werde auf jeden Fall einen weiteren Post über diese Erfahrung machen.
So this is just a small glimpse into the military life.
Looking at the bright side of it. Of course there's so much more to it. But since I'm taking advantage of so many things right now I wanted to show this positive side. The next days I'll write more about the experience with the practice baby and about the marriage retreat we're about to do.

Mit dem Blick auf die positive Seite. Natürlich gibt es so viel mehr. Aber da ich gerade so viele Angebote ausnutze, wollte ich diese positive Seite zeigen. In den nächsten Tagen werde ich mehr über die verrueckte Erfahrung mit dem Übungsbaby und über das Eheseminar schreiben.

I read your text and I found very interesting your writing. There's no way I can opine with great accuracy on the subject because, even though it's a profession that has things in common, how each country deals with your militarism is different. For example, I think you live in the US, right? The UNITED STATES tends to be a belligerent country, so the military must have a hard training focused on issues related to the clash within the fields of war and attacks "surprised". The Brazil is a country more "Pacific" related to the outside, so the tendency to not go into external wars is too large. I think the army is trained to issues related to the own country even. I know I have training for the exterior, however, do things related to enter places of "risk" of death, both by natural factors as humans or help to the population when something happens that way.
