If you have followed me along, you know that I am spending large amount of hours in the garden - not sitting around but working.
These days, I am getting a bit frustrated. The rodent pressure is super high and I have had to harvest fruit way before they are fully ripe to be able to get anything.
I don't mind sharing with wildlife, but I mind if they eat it all...

Have you tried replica rodent predators? My friend had a rodent problem in his garden and he managed to mostly eliminate it by getting a replica plastic owl and some replica plastic snakes. It seems bizarre but it worked for him.. Apparently they are very effective in scaring away the rodents. Good luck with your crop!
Thank you. I should try some out. Maybe it would protect some areas. so far, I have killed about 25 rats and 5 or 6 gophers. And there are many more...
But putting the snakes around the tree producing at the time might work...
I love it! A pacifist approach to pest control :)
maybe get a pet that hunt rodent.
I used to have a minpin and she was very good hunting and killing rats and such. But minpins are also very high strung and love to go and explore. It was impossible to keep her in. And in the end, she got run over by a car.
I don't know if I can handle that again. She was an awesome dog - not many like her...
Sorry to hear about your issues, the heat is terrible here too! I'm in Montréal.
Weather is crazy everywhere now, it seems.
A few weather scientists say the sudden dip in pollution triggered it by clearing up a protective shield, especially created by air traffic.
interesting. Hope the protective shield we used to have - an intact Ozone layer - is repairing itself. I always thought that pollution was holding heat in...
Don't get me wrong, pollution is holding heat in overall. This is about heat coming in while older heat (from pollution holding it in the atmosphere for a long tine) is stored in the oceans.
And you are right, the weak ozone layer has a lot to do with why we now rely on pollution shields.
I heard this theory after 911 from a meteorological study on a sudden drop in air traffic. I can see it coming true.
Interesting. So, we are damned if we do and damned if we don't...
Aquaponics is good for greens and such. Those, I am doing fine with right now. The rats are eating the fruit of my fruit trees (I have quite a few, forgot how many exactly but somewhere between 40 and 50.
I had aquaponics on my plan and have experimented with hydroponics. Aqua takes a bit of fiddling to get the ph right and I am not in a space where I can start a new project.
Thank you for your suggestions!
Oh no! Gardening problems can really be frustrating. I'm so sorry about your chicken! how sad. I hope your neighbors are going to somehow make it up to you. And I hope your grandson is okay! That's frightening. You have had a lot of issues and problems all happen at once. I'm sure it will all get better.
Hugs to you!! And p.s. nice shout out to @felt.buzz. I agree, he does a nice job with his videos.
My neighbor has a lot of problems of his own. His artery split and the only reason he is not bleeding into his body is that a huge blood clot has formed. He is supposed to rest for 3 months and they hope that scar tissue will form and repair his blood vessel. Then, he is going to have surgery to get a stent.
He was working on building a serious fence between our yards since his dogs kept mowing down what we had. Now, we have no fence in one area.
But my chicken is nothing compared to his problems and he is a good neighbor. And it is how life goes. Just frustrating on top of everything else - you know - everything :)
But all good. I will get over it..
Right now, I usually do an evening Actifit walk in my yard. But a huge navy ship exploded and the air is terrible. Burnt rubber and chemicals smell. Yuck.
What? On top of everything else a navy ship exploded?? That is so nuts!
Well I hope the air is clearing (and they are containing the environmental damage) and that your neighbor is on the mend, and the rest of your chickens are safe, and you've found a way to deal with the ants... and, and, and!
I know - it sounds like a bad novel lol
Yesterday, we were still asked to keep windows closed - and didn't need to be asked because it smelled so bad.
So far, so good...

You might need a rodent zapper next 🤣🤣🤣
i have some for inside the house. Last year, rats were chewing through the wall to get in. We caught them with zapper traps and all the holes have massive wood over them.
But that is a bad thing about growing food and having houses all around that deter the predators. We used to have coyotes come through all the time. They eat a lot of rodents.
Actually, my minpin did a good job of killing rats and gophers. But I don't have it in me to get another dog right now - especially if you had a great one. Not all dogs are alike... and they are a big commitment.
