Teaching guide: Techniques for sustaining the classroom

Emphasis in techniques for sustaining classroom control the pupils, the environment and Instructional materials, like lesson plan, textbook, classroom assignment and good organization.

In order to sustain classroom control that will provide conducive atmosphere for meaningful and directional learning, the following processes are necessary.

Intensive and other reinforcement like reward and praises should be used as the need arises but not indiscriminately.
The teacher must also use clear but simple language that can be easily understood by the pupils. He must also speak in a clear but convincing tone.
It is important for the teacher to master the subject matter so as to command the respect of the pupils.
The pupils should be made to appreciate the need not to disturb others either in the classroom, library or sport field.
The teacher must realise that each pupil has the capability to do well. He should therefore give every child the opportunity to perform in the class or express his opinion accordingly.
If a child is consistently difficult to handle, the teacher should strive hard to discover the causes if his behavior. Doing this the teacher will be in a position to assist in satisfying the need of the child.
Commands must not be used sparingly but when used the teacher must ensure compliance, especially during physical activity classes.
The class rules should be few and be decided upon by the class. This is after the teacher must have explained the circumstances necessitating any rule.
In this way, the pupils will see themselves as part of such rules and would be ready to obey them.
The teacher's personality and behavior in terms of speech, dress and general conduct will go a long way to help him control his class effectively.
Significantly, the teacher must be able to control his emotions and temperature in order to be able to control his class.
