Houghton Mill on a summer evening

in #photography8 years ago (edited)

Yesterday evening I took a trip to Houghton Mill near St.Ives, Cambridgeshire.

The weather has cooled down a bit and I've been wanting to get out and try the Canon 50 mm 1.8 II lens on more distant objects and landscapes.

I met a chap there from the National Trust. They look after the mill. He was telling me that they need volunteers to help out with running the mill. They are looking for millers if you know anyone you can get in touch with them.

Back to the camera lens. I was impressed with the detail the 50 mm gives even when you zoom into the image it remains sharply in focus. I haven't used any filters on these photographs as I want to show them just as they are. With the 50 mm lens. What you see with the naked eye is what you get in the camera.

Houghton Mill front view. I like the reflections of the mill in the river.

A splash of red from the boat gives a nice accent to the image.

You know I can't resist an old signpost. Functional and beautiful.

This is the water wheel housing. The business end of the mill.

If you look at the top of this photo you can see the little doorway where the grain was loaded into the mill. A little soft focus on this photo.

This is the mill pond. Built to retain a constant level of water to run the mill wheel.

Below is a bird in flight. A tricky shot to get but the lens worked well.

Water plants

Below is a pollarded tree. It's branches have been cropped. It doesn't damage the tree in any way and helps to keep it healthy and vigorous. People would crop tree branches regularly in the old days for fire wood and for making things.

This lens is handy for a wide range of photography situations including landscapes and portraits. Hope you like the results so far.

Houghton Mill

A little historical background. The mill has been in existence for over 1,000 years. Dating back to 974 A.D. it was linked with the Benedictine Abbey at Ramsey.

The new mill dates from the 1750's when the agricultural revolution was happening and the Industrial revolution was just starting in the UK.

The mechanization of milling which this mill represents subsequently lead to cheaper bread for the masses.

The mill is cared for by the National Trust It is open to the public on Sundays and Bank holidays from March to October and they have working demonstrations of the mill grinding grain into flour.

I visited Houghton Mill last year and made this short video below.

When you look at this old mill remember that at the time, this was the cutting edge of technology and the irony is that we may be soon returning to this method of energy use? It's environmentally friendly, cost effective and renewable.

Fantastic photos! What a great old mill...so glad you visited and shared it!

Beautiful! I've only been to Cornwall once but had a great time. Even though my silly inlaws booked us at John Fowler's Holiday. LOL! Oh Well. We will have to check out St. Ives again next time we are in the UK. (We live in Los Angeles!)

Ha ha @nuthman sorry old chap but this is the other St.Ives in Cambridgeshire. People often get them confused even in the British!

Cornwall is stunning and has great beaches and landscapes. last time I was there was in the 90's.
Last time I was in L.A. was in 1979! Wow I am old ha ha.

your photos are very good and interesting mr. @molometer

the building of the house is nice and unique, the atmosphere of the clear sky, the atmosphere in the calm lake, the trees and the fertile water plants, the beauty of God's creation

thank you for sharing this cool photo and video
