New supermarket hygiene technology

in #smartphonephotography8 years ago (edited)

This is a follow up post on our first trip to a new super market on the ring road around St.Ives in Cambridgeshire. The photographs were taken with my ZTE Blade V7 lite smartphone in high dynamic range (HDR mode) for added zhoosh!

They have an innovative restroom hygiene technology that people may not have seen. It is not glamorous but it performs an important role in the hygiene of the stores customers. Assuming they use it? But before I reveal this new tech let's have a wander around the store.

Stack it high, sell it cheap

Stack it high and sell it cheap and you have a winning business plan. The rack on the top left of the photograph below obviously had something dirt cheap as it's empty.

This is considered to be a 'small' supermarket and yet it has aisle after aisle of products on offer. As the photo below shows it is more like a warehouse style construction. Which means that if it is not a success they can tear it down and move it somewhere else pretty quickly.

Have you ever noticed that when you go to a supermarket on a regular basis that the products seem to be constantly in the 'wrong' place? Or at least. Not where they were before?

For those of you that do not know already. This is by design and not an accident. They rotate stock in order to keep you in the store longer. The reason for this is to give you more opportunities to 'impulse purchase' more product.

The supermarkets know exactly how we operate and use every trick in the book to keep you shopping.

Save Yourself

There is a way to counter this form of manipulation by supermarkets and it's quite effective. Don't get a big trolley when you shop and even more extreme. Don't even get a basket. Only buy what you can carry in your arms. Sounds nuts right? Try it and see how you get on. Take a photograph of yourself with arms full of products and add it below if you wish.

How many times have you gone into a supermarket to get milk or bread and come out with bags full of stuff?

Self check outs:- You are now an unpaid member of the supermarket staff. How's that for convenience?

And finally that piece of new technology in the restroom. It's a combined water tap and jet wash. You wash your hands and then place them under the arms either side for a jet of warm air to dry your and sanitize your hands. Then you come out and put your hands on that supermarket trolley? You don't know where that has been before you picked it up?

With all that food around the need for good hygiene is essential. Have a great weekend :)

I've never seen a faucet quite like that... interesting.

I've worked in the big grocery business for over 25 years. You are totally right. We constantly reset shelves and move displays. Also... The milk is always in the back of the store. That way you have to go through the whole store to get your basic staple.

It drives me batty lol but I can see the business sense of it. Good to have an 'insider' spilling the beans lol @doctorcrypto

Just ask . I'll spill away. :)

Yesterday I went to our local supermarket to buy just one item. I decided not to get the trolly and I was struggling with my hands full with other things I was not suposed to buy. :-) I wish I had a photo of myself to show. :-)

That would have been fun to see. It's amazing what we end up with when we visit a supermarket :)

What you say about the supermarket makes sense and I'm convinced that this is really true. Thanks for the tricks. I will try ... harder. Often I was without a basket and looked like a Christmas tree. The same problem with cleaning your hands in public toilets or gas stations. You clean your hands and then, to go, you have to open the door with your clean hand ... but you do not know if the one in front of you washed his hands.

This is so true. We need automatic doors on these restrooms so we don't have to touch the door handle.
Good for you going without the basket. I bet that was a sight to see. :)

Yes, I'll do that again... provided that my wife will not be with me.

Haha take a photo next time and make a post. Start a new trend!

Thank you! I will. About the trend...I have seen many people doing the same.

Great pictures. That is an interesting faucet and hand dryer arrangement.

Here in my little town, our local grocery offers antibacterial wipes next to the buggy bays, to wipe down the parts of the cart we handle. They also have similar stands in the produce section, next to the deli counter, in the meat department, and the registers all have a canister of wipes for the checkers and baggers as well.

Of course, in the States, we have some pretty rigid food safety laws and the health departments are usually very strict.

We have strict hygiene standards here too but enforcement is another issue. Nice tap blower though. :)

Haha, "They rotate stock in order to keep you in the store longer." I knew it was an evil plot! They know I just came in for my bag of Doritos and want to make it hard ;/ That faucet/dryer is a new thing for me, never seen one before. Thanks for the tour!

It's a conspiracy I tell ya! I bet you came out with the Doritos and a few dips? lol

Lol, no dips, but always Doritos 🎉

Looks like a lot of good food, especially the bread.

There is a huge selection of just about anything you can think of.

Excellent post thanks for sharing.....................

It is very crazy what stores and business' in general do to get us to spend money. It can be sickening when you really think about it. Most of the time we knowingly give in. Keep up the good work and original content, everyone appreciates it!
