You never know what you will come across when out and about. When we visited Dubai Safari Park a few months ago I photographed these antelope because the little calf was just so cute. It's only when I was researching the animal for this post that I discovered that it is in fact a highly endangered species and so much more.

This animal used to be widely dispersed across Sub-Saharan Africa but has been hunted almost to extinction and can now only be seen in safari parks and zoos. I know, you have heard this story a million times already about the way we humans, as a species are destroying almost everything around us?
Does that mean that we should ignore these facts? No. But what can we do? Well quite a lot really. You can join a conservation group like the Born Free Foundation

Ban the sale of ivory
Stop buying horn and ivory products. Ivory and other horn products are banned in the USA but Britain was until April 2018 the biggest exporter of ivory in the world. New measures were announced in April 2018 to extend the ban on ivory products.
There are some exceptions though which may cause more problems in the future.
These will include:
1 Items comprised less than 10% ivory (by volume) and made before 1947.
2 Musical instruments made before 1975 and comprised of less than 20% ivory.
3 Rare or important items, at least 100 years old, will be assessed by specialist institutions before exemption permits are issued.
4 There will be specific exemptions for portrait miniatures painted on thin ivory bases and for commercial activity between accredited museums
I don't see how killing this beautiful Addax and then cutting it's head and horns off would improve the overall look of your 'den' or lounge.
It's subjective of course but it baffles me that some people feel the need to express themselves by killing these rare animals and in many cases. The rarer the better?
I think the Addax antelopes curly horns look fabulous and even better when still attached to the live animal. I know a lot of my North American and Canadian friends like to hunt in general so it will be interesting to hear your views about hunting endangered species?
The Ivory DNA evidence
The problem of illegal ivory entering the market was identified using DNA samples carried out by Samuel Wasser
The illegal ivory had been mixed in with so called 'old' ivory and made into new products. Where there is money to be made. Some people will find a way around any regulations.
The British move is welcome but doesn't go far enough. We need a 100% ban on these products if these animals are to survive.
You see, you never know what you will find when you are just out and about? I feel privileged to have seen these beautiful creatures while they still exist.

Wow such a beautiful animal. This is so bad, how could people be killing such a beautiful creature? I hope great steps would be taken to save this animal from extinction. The ban isn't enough.
I agree. We need to get these animals proper protection. We can all do our bit to pressure the politicians into doing the right thing.

It is an illegal trade. Unfortunately, the process must be within the framework of the law so that it does not become extinct
The law is not enough. It has to become socially unacceptable to hunt them and protect these wonderful animals.
