3 Items To A Desert Island

HIVERS, hello! 👋

Being stuck on an Island despite being a course of anxiety to many, to me would be the best opportunity to really get in touch with myself. Without the everyday interactions with anyone, it would mean I would have to actually have time to make peace with being myself, time to stare at my darkest side, time to be in touch with my most repressed and undesirable thoughts.

Of course I do understand the need for human interactions with other humans, but the thing is it is very hard to not be influenced by what others think, other's perspective, and it is very easy to never listen to one's inner voice, or rather intuition because someone somewhere influenced our perspective, and not that their perspective is universally right, or wrong, it just makes sense to them, but not necessary to us, resulting in making decisions not because we know it is right or it is what is best for us, but because someone else said it is the way.

So being in an Island away from humanity would be the perfect chance to fully harness one's intuition, get to observe how one actually behaves, in making peace with the inevitable boredom I think one would learn and get to know a new version of their character, which would never really happen when one is always surrounded by people, never being really alone.

Being someone interested in pursuing creative endeavors of course that is why I would posit such an argument, it doesn't necessarily make sense to many, it is not right or wrong, it just makes sense according to the life I would love to lead.

That said the following are the three items I would bring with me to a desert Island;

1. A Knife

The simplicity of a simple tool such as a knife is just fascinating, used wisely one can fashion almost anything necessary for the survival in any location, well in this place an Island, all alone with no one else but nature for company.

With this I could fashion wood to right fire with, by creating friction between particular types of wood one being shaped like an arrow and the other having a small hole on where to drill to generate a flame and build a fire.

With a knife, your imagination and creativity is the only limit...

2. A Compass.

We all can concur on how easy it is to feel disoriented and lose a sense of direction, more so being in the middle of nowhere, the body has no way of sensing where one came from or even where is headed to, it is very easy to be disoriented and just walk around in loops without even realizing that it.

With a Compass, I will always know one thing for sure, which is North, with that despite being disoriented it is very easy to realign and understand how to progress, of course being on an Island would mean exploring the place to discover what to use, and get a better understanding of how the new environment.

It will also be important to understand which direction is Home, there will be those days where one can't run faster enough to escape despondency and hopelessness, always having a sense of where to look to when such times arise would help lessen the sadness of being all alone.

It would also be a source of much needed hope, a hope that one day you would get to leave the Island and finally reunite with humanity. Solitude is crucial for better self understanding but humanity too is crucial, we all need that human connection.

3. A Copy of Man's Search For Meaning

For those who have come across a copy of Man's Search For Meaning, by the 20th Century Austrian Neurologist, Viktor Frankl would understand why it would make sense to bring a long a copy of that publication.

Frankl does a profound job in detailing from his experiences in the infamous Concentration Camps, how despite being surrounded by adversities, we can survive even fits we are not consciously aware that we could.

He describes the different stages of emotional death, to the point where one can no longer give up, but rather one is curious to see how worse it can get...

Of course the suffering in an Island alone does not measure up to the suffering in a concentration camp, but going through such a book would be always a source of encouragement that no matter how hard it would get, humans can survive much worse. That would be much needed on those days when giving up would feel mostly feel like the best option....

... see you all in my next update!
