Why Is Hive Ded?

Well Hellooo Fellow Hivers!

Today I want to ponder the question as to why Hive is ded. To get the wheels rolling, please check out my Hive buddy @markkujantunen and his piece What Is The Main Reason More People Do Not Use Hive As Their Preferred Social Media? In it he lays out a good case as to why it makes perfect sense for those that use traditional social media to switch over to Hive and make a little coin for their trouble. I agree with him that it does boggle the mind why so many people have not tried or have came and left. Here is what I wrote as a comment: You hit the nail on the head as we like to say, meaning of course that you got it exactly right. For me For me, YouTube, Steem, then Hive have all been bits of fun. Yes I like to make money, who doesnt? Yet that is not my main motivation. I enjoy sharing my digital diary and getting rewarded is a nice bonus.

However, if it makes perfect sense for folks to migrate to Hive, it begs the question as to why it has not happened. I started on Steemit over three years ago after the failure of Tsu and Niume. I saw first hand the coin go from a dime to over five bucks and back again. So I think it is fair to say that although Hive is not dead, we are not exactly setting the world on fire. I read where the CEO of Parler said they gained about half a million new accounts LAST WEEK! Now folks that is the opposite of dead!

Now if you are thinking that I have the answers, I am sorry I do not. It is a mystery to me why Steem/Hive never really took off. I think it is a given that folks like money. Possibly when money is involved, people automatically switch their brains into work vs compensation mode. Then they quickly make the deduction that the "compensation" is not adequate for the "effort" put forth to earn it. Now I am happy to say I never fell into this dilemma because I do not feel like this is work, therefore I am not expecting a commensurate amount of pay. I look at it simply as a hobby where I get to earn a few bucks over time.

Perhaps the problem is that the compensation is in crypto? I know Steem was my first crypto I ever owned and it was somewhat daunting at first blush with keys you cant lose or disclose, and the whole idea of where the "money" come from etc etc. I mean the concept in my mind seems easy...create a Facebook that rewards the creators. However as easy as it sounds, it apparently is quite elusive in the real world.

I sure would like to hear your thoughts...

I won't lie. I Facebooked for the family and friends that I went to school with. It is an easy way to keep up in an all-inclusive way.

I was lost when I went to Steem. Way more than @jaceyboldart was. Trust me. I was ignorant enough to not realize what a delegation meant, didn't even realize that @twinner had given me on almost right away. I didn't even know how to figure out who gave it to me. If that wasn't embarrassing enough... I didn't even know who to thank. Keys? Passwords that you can't recoup? Oh, my!

I found my way, although, it was slow and painful. Maybe this is one of the reasons the masses don't run here. As much as I thought I understood many things, this made me realize I know nothing.

Eventually, I figured out that I needed to post more than one picture and a poem to make people look twice. Oh, the pity votes! Now, they are better equipped with people that take care of the newbies, guiding them until they understand. So, I think in my mind, it is much friendlier.

I don't look at it as having to post, working it or such. I like it here, I liked Steem and was sad that went the way it did. Would I like Hive to be worth more than $.0.21 Sure. But, even when it isn't, I'm still going to post.

I'm pretty sure I am off the subject by now, but, to be clear, it is not as easy as many of the sites at first glance for someone coming in. That scares off some. Too hard to get a following, even if you are good. Unless you are patient, which most people aren't. That is my two cents.

Upped and Reposted

Yes I am going to post as well. Is Hive going to moon or even go up from here, who can say? When I started on Steem I let half of my post rewards power up, bit I took out the liquid half. However once Steem was flying, I decided to power up 100%. After all this time, I think my original posture was the best...power up half and hedge by taking out the rest.

I think everyone has to do what is best for them. I am sure you are right as you are the money man... I will have to think about what is right for me. I am not quite decided on that yet.

Give me a moment, I will change my mind. I already posted. Again. :P It is hard keeping up with you.

Thank you, @twinner!

Ich schätze alles, was du für mich getan hast. Ich wünschte, ich hätte damals Wissen. Vielen Dank für deine Hilfe.

I didn't read your post further than the first paragraph because it's unreadable in bold.

I don't know the answer either but.....

On my facebook, I don't spend the time that it takes to write blogs, but my friends and family are there and I get to keep up with family photos and local happenings and things that actually touch my real life here.

You know I was not on Steem (now Hive) during the boom, but honestly, if I had not known you and Denise already when I got here and if ya'll hadn't exposed me to your friends, (which btw have been very kind and accepting of me) I probably wouldn't be here now either. It is not easy to get to know strangers and be interesting enough that enough people will follow you to make a fun, active, social play place or money.... as you put it, the compensation isn't adequate for the amount of time that is spent. ( if that is why one is here.)

I have been lucky because of ya'll and a few others who curate now and then and leave friendly trains of votes and I truly appreciate that.

If a person comes here without knowing anyone, there will be very few that will either get enough fun interaction or crypto to keep them coming back.

I am afraid some folks look at it to be a replacement to their 9 to 5 jobs. Hopefully people are not "selling" Hive that way to outsiders. I think it is kind of Facebook like but with tips.

I do think some people are "selling" it that way and if they were here during the boom , their accounts my make that look possible, but for now and since before I got here over a year and a half ago, it takes a whole lot of life minutes to make a little bit of change.

I don't really see it like facebook at all, but I do understand everyone has a different point of view. I'm not saying that facebook as a whole is all that grand at all ! Just that I think it is very different.

You may be onto something. It doesn't really help that some people seem to approach Hive (earlier Steem) as work. They're always on about how they've been working so hard. It's the seriousness that I believe many people may be put off by. This is supposed to be fun and rewarding even without considering the crypto rewards. There's no chance "the masses" will come without that being the case because there will never be enough rewards to go around to a meaningful extent for everyone. This is why it's not good for the culture here to be so serious all the time and all about the money. In fact, it might make sense for the front ends to hide the rewards behind one click.

Perhaps short form posts will be the only way forward for many?

Definitely. Short commentary of funny or interesting videos they find on the internet. The same sort of posting common on mainstream platforms.

🎁 Hi @old-guy-photos! You have received 0.1 HIVE tip from @dswigle!

Check out @dswigle blog here and follow if you like the content :)

Sending tips with @tipU - how to guide.

I think it's a number of things keeping people away.

  • Cryptocurrency, in the mainstream, is considered bad and people believe it.
  • There is a learning curve to cryptocurrency so people will have to put in some work and people are generally lazy.
  • A good majority of the posts that a new user would first encounter (trending page) aren't that appealing or interesting unless you are already into Hive/Cryptocurrency.
  • Account creation can be challenging.
  • If you do manage to set up an account, rewards for good content doesn't actually happen. Rewards are based on who you know for the most part, and new users don't know anyone so they'll get discouraged earning $0.01 on posts they spend a lot of time on and eventually leave.
  • But probably the biggest of all is no one knows about it. You can probably mention Parler randomly in a crowd and at least a few people would know it by now. Steem and Hive haven't gotten the word out enough. I don't know why that is after this many years, but I have yet to be able to mention Steem or Hive and have someone know what I'm talking about after 3+ years.

Totally agree with all these points! Many we have been harping abour for years!

I have been hearing about Parler from word of mouth. I dont know if the advertise, but people have been all over talking it up.

I think people still don't understand the crypto and decentralized world. And I personally feel the big problem is signup and passwords. Because many don't understand posting and active keys. People love easy login and user-friendly applications nowadays. Maybe one day Hive will also introduce application as well.

On youtube, audience is more and different according to categories. In fact, Instagram is nowadays famous for promotion and business. If you check TikTok, you will see a lot of talented creators. Why? Why these applications are popular? Maybe easy to handle...

I still don't know why it is hard to explain about Hive to people, I tried to explain to my sis and I failed... :(

I failed with my kids as well. I see that is a real problem. I have tried to get my kids using Hive. They are both early 20s and dont want to have a thing to do with it. Basically they feel the money is not worth the hassle.

Hehehe true... They calculate always ...On the other hand, they seem very calculating about their life...

There two factors that I see about Hive not getting sign-ups. One is that not all people can blog and write "long" post unlike facebook.
And two is that they are discouraged even if they sign-up to get less attention even none because really it is hard to start in here particularly now that the Hive price is in the crapper. @old-guy-photos

Agreed. I think the easier short form posts will have to be a bigger part of Hive if we are going to attract average users.

What initially turned me off was when I first started with Steem, there was a distaste for what people called "shitposts". To me, coming from social media like Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook, it seemed like the emphasis was not on social media at all. People were especially concerned about "quality content" and emphasized writing blog posts. Who has time?

Soon after, they started pushing people to use downvotes and worked it into a hard fork. Clearly, Steem/Hive does not want social media.

I just kind of fell into the habit of not treating Steem/Hive like social media. Why risk a downvote?

Lately, I get the impression that Hive has relaxed and is more open to accept what people enjoy posting.

Agreed. I do feel that short form posts will have a growing importance simply due to the lack of enough rewards to fairly value a large number of long form posts

I am with you @old-guy-photos, posting is not work, it is a fun activity that I not only enjoy but am also developing my writing blog skills. I really love commenting and making connections not to say that making a little bit with upvoting is not a boost to the ego.

Exactly how I view it too. Have fun and hope for the best for the Hive coin.

I think for many they just look at you weird if you even mention crypto and combine that with it not being the most straightforard of sign ups may put a few people off. I have had a bit of success recruiting 5 people here in my circle in the last month or so into hive but it wasn't a simple task. All , shall we say, social media is very different. Facebook have made it super easy to stay in touch with people you personally know globally. thats a hard one to fight. Twitter for me is where I get news and follow things of interest. its real time on the ground stuff, be it earthquake info, travel info or what Groovey bruce Campbell is up to from the Evil dead. Instagram seems , at least to me, to be more for the narcissist. I could never get to love it. And don't get me wrong I do love a bit of me, but not like that. Reddit is a bit like the colosseum in ancient Rome. Don't walk in there untrained or equipped or you'll be torn to shreds and Tumblr is errr crap. Hive is a great platform for really sharing your creative side. It's amazing and i think has people stepping up and trying harder. Now if they could make the platform a little easier to see who's online you know ( I aint the shapest knife in the drawer so if thats a thing let me know) or have the ability to real time message ( again same as before) that may appeal to people and possibly get them to bring friends on board. I now only use other forms od media for communication. This is where i do my sharing of creative content. Sorry for typing so much, I started and couldn't stop

Oh thanks for the well thought out reply! It sounds then that Hive may stay a niche player, which is ok, but we still need to improve the user experience like you said. Congrats on bringing those people to the site!

i hope they can make the platform a little more rounded as it means people would use it more for more reasons and not think of using the other mediums

From what I have seen, mist if the people that blog consistently on Hive came from Steemit and they do it for the love of writing, not the rewards.
I still use other platforms but I dobit for various reasons. Hive is my outlet for everything, FB is for family, friends, supporters while Tumblr and Instagram are for posting my works. In addition, using all of these platforms helps me get traffic to my websites, creating back links and off course getting new customers.

I would say that it is foundational to love what you do here, and to see the rewards simply as a bonus.
