So this big Ringneck dove landed on the millet plant, as he has decided that the corn is ready to eat.
But he had a big balancing problem as the plant stem is not very steady.
In fact the small heads are more suitable for the smaller sead eaters, but the dove has decided that he is a small seed eater.
Strangely it is only the one dove of the crowd of doves here that has decided that he likes millet. Where the millet plants come from, we don't know as we didn't plant them in the garden and I cannot blame the squirrels.
Come and look at this athlete.
I have taken this series of shots as it happened and the wind made things a bit difficult for the dove.
This particular dove is named as a Cape Turtle Dove (Ringneck dove) of the specie (Streptopelia capicola).
On some days I count more than 20 of them here in our garden including some other dove species.
This guy was determined to eat and he did in between his balancing tricks.
I was surprised that the plant stem did not bend over, but it only swayed in the wind.
Another dove tried to come and have a look, but our guy was not going to give up his turf, or his plant.
Then a bit later the unexpected happened!
The big dove had enough and after he left, a smaller dove must have been watching the action as he popped up onto the plant.
Oops! He almost capsized.
But he was successful just as the rain came down again and he left in a hurry.
All of the shots were taken here through my study window as twice this morning I went outside when I thought that there was a lull in the rain and twice I got wet hahaha.
My camera doesn't like getting wet and he told me that I better keep him inside today, or else he will simply refuse to work.
So, I was forced to stay inside 😜

Rain, rain and more rain. We are indeed blessed with water thus far.

Doves have been abundant here as well, they really are slow docile birds only moving at the very last minute when not chasing each other around.

Ah yes, we also have one guy here that rules the roost and he chases all of the other doves around.
The only time that they move very fast is when Harry and Sally arrive to find the doves crowding their feeding bucket hahaha. This happens every day and as soon as the geese leave, then the doves are back in big numbers. Often a squirrel runs right through the crowd and it's funny to see the pandemonium.

A gif would have been cool indeed, Zac, but even without any animations I can clearly imagine how funny it must have looked, the dove balancing on the plant and trying to get some food 😂

Yes, I should have thought that you could see it in your imagination Hannes, so I have not mafe the gif. I sit with about 30 photos of their action on that plant and amazing how determined they are to eat and balance at the same time. The smaller dove was also very cheeky as a few times the bigger ones tried to chase him off, but he simply refused and held on tight.
Grey in grey it was indeed at both of our ends, but today we had an hour's break and I got a few shots.

They say that the 1st day of June is the start of our Winter, but snow already fell inland on the mountains two weeks ago. I popped out with the camera and it is icy outside, one can see smoke coming out of many chimneys as the people have wood fires inside their houses.
We only have a small one bar heater for little Troy and I am worried about him as it seems that he is losing his hearing and his eysight is also bad. I hate to think about the day that he will be no more, as it is going to be very difficult for us. He has now been my shadow for 6 years.

And the Summer is coming to us :) There's still too much snow on the mountains and so it's still too cold down here in the valleys and all kinds of heatings are still needed - strange weather.
I know how this must feel and I am so glad that last year we had no idea that our cat would die. He was dead when we came home and that was sad enough. At first we said we don't want to have a cat ever again, but a month later we started to look for new kittens - it was just too lonely without one.
