By upvoting a burn post or comment, the author rewards of that post/comment are burned (sent to @null and thus not available for anybody and taken out of the system). Your curation rewards are not burned and those are added to your HP automatically when you claim them.
By removing Hive from the system, a tiny little less sell pressure is on Hive as it reduces inflation.
Why burn the rewards in an inflationary system where new coin is created out of thin air daily and you could never burn enough to matter any way? It should be powered up instead
Probably you misunderstood. By upvoting a burn post or comment just the author rewards of that post/comment are burned. Your curation rewards are not and those are added to your HP automatically when you claim them.
I think it is a waste of good HP for no real reason, regardless of what parts are thrown away.
No HP is wasted in the process.
What does it help?
It reduces inflation, because from the Hives that are printed out of thin air and go into the author reward pool those can´t be sold.

If curation rewards would be burned too, nobody would be incentivized to do it, as it would directly eat into your yield. Why self vote, author reward goes to @null.
Burn isn't burn if somebody is fully incentivized.
Let's say you set it to burn at 50% (to null), it should burn both ways - for both curators & authors.
At least that is what my understanding is, if the true goal is really to burn.
You can't burn curation rewards. The only way to do something remotely close to that would be for you, after receiving the curation rewards (because they always go to yourself) would be to unstake them, and then sending the liquid HIVE to @null.
But question is, why is system designed like that? If you want to burn, burn from both sides.
Putting a burn picture, as far as I understand, just results in to self-vote only.
Why it is designed like that? You may better ask those who do this in great style and daily:

It is like printing out Hive for free in the name of burn.
On one end, one increases his/her own stake in the name of burn.
On other end, with that stake, empower everyone else & play with investors money.
It's a shame that no body is rising questions on this.
I probably should not have upvoted myself on my own burn posts, given that I could have voted on any other burn posts instead. And I think I am going to stop it because that promotes self-voting for people who don't understand why I am doing it.
It's not very easy to explain these things in small words (for me). Because many of the reasons these things exist are "adjustments" to what previously could have been a problem, and then the majority agrees on making that sort of adjustment. For example, previously, the rewards were not 50/50% and that created a bigger problem with circle voting or even self-voting. With the 50/50, that incentive was reduced...
Either way (and this is just an example, not really related to exactly explaining your question), curation works in my view... and yes there is still lots of problems with bad actors, but they will always exist, no matter how you design things.
I don't spend much time stating on the chain what my thoughts are about the code... and how I think it could work, not because I don't have these... but because these thoughts usually can confuse people, and I don't want to do that to the many that might not understand. These kind's of conversations can be had on chain, but you really need to know the person, otherwise they can go very weirdly or off topic.
This is one of the reasons I give a damn to reply to you. Not being afraid if for some reason I misstyped something or we don't understand each other on a specific topic or point. Because we met, and we have a reference of each other. That matters a lot on this chain.
And with that, I have slightly gone off topic...sorry :P - my point is, to answer you, people can now use AI, so spending some time finding out about things, is a good thing. Doing some research in the past was very costly, today? really cheap...
And note, I know you are just talking and asking... and that's fine. But yeah, my view is these types of conversations are quite hard to have on chain. :D In a meeting... fine. And if you want, we can have one again. I liked the one we had the other day on snaps.

This proposal adjusts the maximum spending on proposals, in short words. The higher it gets, the less spending can potentially happen. The lower it gets, the more allowance it can permit. Although there is also a limit on the DHF itself, and depending on which proposals are voted on, that DHF daily limit can be or not all consumed. So, in a sense, voting for the right proposals is what matters. This slider (called the return proposal) acts more as a limitator of max spending and for the ones that don't want to vote for proposals that are at the top, as an expression of interest to say, we "don't agree" with those proposals being voted by the rest of the community.
This also acts as a defence mechanism, because lets imagine, that someone has 51% of the chain HP, and creates a proposal for getting DHF money for itself... then because it has 51% of chain HP, that person could upvote the proposal and automatically fund itself forever (assuming it keeps buying HIVE and continuously power up to be above or at around the 51%). Having a "return proposal" incentives others that don't agree with this, to stake slightly more HP (aka small cost), to refute the spending making the return proposal above the limit needed for the big 51% holder to keep. Eventually making the attacker go under 51% in stake, and decentralising the decision again.
Now, I know this is not perfect... because there is still cost to defend against this, but its relatively small cost. But we can potentially make it more efficient. Such as making the return proposal with a ratio multiplier... so that less people is needed for it to make an effect and for that ratio to not be linear... at low voting value, the ratio should be 1, but at high voting value, the ratio should increase to provide a method of "majority of the chain disagrees" and reduce the cost for expression of disagreement.
This can result in a problem too.. what if an attacker hates the top proposals, it can rapidly cease all the funding by holding majority of the chain HP... although, this sounds negative, this would mean that attacker is against where the DHF funds are going but he also can create a proposal for himself and get those funds himself... so, it self denies the ability to attack for self benefit.
Another attack could be the fact that someone wants to inhibit the chain development... by holding 51% of HP... well, if that person wants to do that, by holding at the same time 51%, then its a beneficial (for the community) attack, because keeping that 51% of HP will have to continue for a long time until the rest of the chain self balances, aquiring more HP. So, this would also contradict the act of attacking. And therefore, this aggressor would not eventually keep doing this, reducing his stake.
So, in a sense, I think a ratio could work... I should have probably made a normal post... instead of a comment. And please to anyone reading this HUGE comment... the examples I used here or numbers might not be technically 100% correct, but it was just to explore an idea. Anyone can comment... just brainstorming ok...
