And not only carbon dioxide but also large portions of the two poles of Mars are stored as ice. Mars does not have its own magnetic field. Earth's atmosphere remains on its magnetic field. The magnetic field binds the solar storms into two-dimensional earth, and the result is that the atmosphere does not fly away with the storm.
