While walking down Fernandez de Zerpa Avenue, I stopped for a while at Ali Primera Square; this is one of the city’s oldest landmarks. I remember passing through here on my way to exercise at the Monument about twenty years ago. Today, the square is still there, weathering the ravages of time even though it hasn’t been restored.
It’s worth mentioning that there’s another plaza in Cumana named after the Venezuelan singer-songwriter, located at the entrance to Panamericana Avenue, where you can see some sculptures of musical instruments (cuatros and maracas) and a mural featuring Primera’s face.
In contrast, this old Ali Primera square bears no references to the singer-songwriter; only a plaque remains on the site. Nevertheless, it is a landmark in the city, as various food stalls operate here from morning until the early hours of the morning, making the place very busy at all hours, especially at night. There are benches where you can rest and chat for a while under some palm trees that offer welcome shade.
This square is another of the many located near The Copita, with the exception that there is commercial activity here: not only do the kiosks sell their goods, but in the morning you can also find fresh fish and vegetables for sale. I remember that, in the past, residents from the communities of Boca e Lobo and Punta of Mata would gather here to spend a pleasant afternoon because across from the square was the popular The Niña bakery, as well as a supermarket and a liquor store.
The square is just as I remember it, except for the number of people who used to be there; of the larger businesses, only the bakery and the supermarket are still open, while the newsstands aren't usually open all the time. Times change.

Caminando por la Avenida Fernández de Zerpa me detuve un rato en la plaza Ali Primera, este lugar es bastante antiguo en la ciudad. Recuerdo transitar por aquí cuando me dirigía a realizar ejercicios en el Monumento hace unos veinte años atrás. Hoy la plaza sigue allí y resiste los embates del tiempo aún cuando no ha sido restaurada.
Cabe mencionar que en Cumaná existe otra plaza con el nombre del cantautor venezolano, la cual se encuentra en la entrada de la Avenida Panamericana, donde se pueden observar algunas esculturas de instrumentos musicales (cuatros y maracas) y un mural con el rostro de Primera.
En contraste, esta antigua plaza Ali Primera carece de referencias al cantautor, apenas una placa permanece en el lugar. No obstante, es un punto referencial en la ciudad ya que acá funcionan diferentes kioskos de ventas de comida, desde la mañana hasta la madrugada, por tanto, el lugar es muy concurrido a toda hora, sobre todo en las noches. Hay bancos para descansar y conversar un rato bajo algunas palmeras que ofrecen buena sombra en la cual refugiarse.
Esta plaza es otra de las tantas que están ubicadas cerca de La Copita, con la salvedad de que acá se presenta actividad comercial ya que no solamente son los kioskos los que ofrecen sus productos, en la mañana se observa una venta de pescado fresco y verduras. Recuerdo que, anteriormente, en este espacio se reunían vecinos de las comunidades de Boca e Lobo y Punta de Mata a pasar un buen rato en las tardes porque frente a la plaza estaba la popular panadería La Niña, además de un supermercado y una licorería.
La plaza sigue tal como la recuerdo, con la excepción de la cantidad de personas que solían estar allí, de los grandes negocios solamente la panadería y el supermercado siguen en pie, en tanto los kioscos no suelen abrir a toda hora. Los tiempos cambian.
