Couldn’t sleep, I’m that excited about making music. Spent all yesterday after class brainstorming baselines on two tracks.
Listened to the 3 demos we completed last month and felt a little less than satisfied, but even the demos sound better than anything we’ve released.
We had a meeting to discuss the final tracklist and titles and the potential for a single release before the album, as well as a schedule.
The album will revolve around three pairs of songs that serve as each others opposite, a conflict and resolution if you will, or a before and after, though the album ends where it begins, as the Fool ends up right back up at the very same mountaintop with a newfound understanding he received during his journey but ready to set out again.
There is a whole lot more I could say but I want to save it for when it’s ready to release. The personal and symbolic themes go much much deeper than that.
We discussed the potential for interludes and intros and all that and it seems the album will most likely be 7 tracks with the potential for two more interludes so 7-9 tracks.
All of this was somewhat decided but now it’s being finalized. There was a time in which I thought it would be 4 very long tracks and eventually it evolved into 11 shorter tracks before coming to this plan.
I originally had two songs in mind for singles before release but we decided yesterday on a completely different song. We decided the two other songs are a bit too central to the theme and end up spoiling the fun of the album, so we decided on a song that is the most different from everything we’ve done so far but one that represents the album well.
As for the schedule, I will try to complete the 3 songs I’ve done demos for first and the. The fourth track we record will be the single, which we will release upon completion as a teaser while we finish up the last 3+ tracks. When it’s release that’s a sign that we are past the halfway mark.
The date we are aiming for that is August 1st, but hopefully sooner.
From this discussion I realized that getting the album out as soon as possible isn’t as important as creating some excitement around it beforehand. We’ve already released the live album and an EP which gives people a clear indication of where the music may be headed, especially if they see our current live setup, so I am trying to slow down and hold back my urge to share ASAP.
Instead I need to create a steady workflow despite many things serving to distract me. At least 5 days of work with my guitar in one hand and music editing software in the other. Some goal each day that I achieve.
First will be writing the bass lines for these two songs. Then I’ll need to do a second and potentially third take for each on guitar and vocals and see if I can find a final version I’m happy with.
If I can finalize these two songs I’ll send them out to be mixed and start working on the third. The goal for that is the end of this month.
Yesterday I wrote a bass part. Today I’ll add it to the initial demo and show it feels.
Then on tomorrow or Monday I will re-record guitar and vocals for one of not both songs. If I’m on a role I might record a third though that’s getting a bit ambitious.
Let’s fly with that. If I run into no problems whatsoever maybe I can add backup vocals and bass on Tuesday a Wednesday and mix it the after next weekend. That’s very ambitious but once I get on a roll things come together quickly so I’ll be optimistic for now.
If I could come close to finishing 3songs by the end of the month, I could essentially get straight to the 4th song which will be the single at the beginning of next month!
That single is the hurdle for me because I refuse to release it until the album is half done and half done requires a lot of work without sharing any of the fruits of my labor. M
Ok, enough ruminating, back to work!
