Crook Hall Gardens, Durham

in #garden • 22 days ago (edited)

This is our last stop from our recent trip up north. We were heading home from Edinburgh and that is a long way so we looked for somewhere to stop via the Nation Trust app. I found Crook Hall Gardens that is not far from Durham city centre.

Crook Hall

This is really just a garden as I do not think the house is open. They do have a cafe by the entrance where we could get some lunch. There is a maze near that, but we did not try it.

Maze and cafe

The garden was looking lush despite the recent dry weather. There are a number of different areas that have been designed around various themes.

You can walk through a small part of the building that looks old.

Old hall

I think these were new beds that are shaped like church windows with the cathedral in the distance.

There was a new area they have reclaimed from a field. We had a chat with some of the volunteers there who were busy tending the beds. There was also an interesting display of different types of composting. I have a few bins of my own to recycle out waste.

We are always looking for ideas and liked this bed. We have plenty of old bricks we could use.

We have been to Durham before, but did not know about this place. It made for a nice break from the long drive.

The gardens look in pretty good shape after the crazy hot summer.

I think people have to learn to cope with that. Need drought tolerant plants.

Agreed, it makes sense to me. Back in the Roman times in the UK it must have been much warmer as they grew grapes for eating and wine making.
Cornwall is full of tropical plants and trees.

I haven't been to that NT property, but I've visited the beautiful Durham city.

We pass Durham whenever we go further north so it's nice to see more of it.

That’s also one of the things I love about traveling. I get to discover different ideas, perspectives, and ways of doing things that I can apply to improve different aspects of my life.

It’s a nice garden, but it seems not very well maintained.

I think it is maintained, but they may not want to make it super neat. Our own garden is a bit like that.

Well, my mother once told me, “Don’t make it too neat, it’s a garden, after all.”

Looks like they need to trim up their hedges a bit!

Since they had some rain everything would be growing again. They had a few people working there so I expect it will get done.

That's about how it has been at our house. We finally got rain and it's like spring all over again with our lawn.

Es una casa demasiado antigua , pero me encantaría limpiar y cuidar esos jardines
