I think of all of the children, smokers, cats, dogs, and other signs of ordinary life that are still present.

I agree with you. However, the number of Chinese is so large that Chinese people would not be interested in the mortality rate.
Perhaps China wants to reduce its population for economic development because of the lack of food and resources compared to its population.

Because of censorship and disinformation from the CCP, we can only guess why the CCP is doing whatever they're doing. Without facts, people guess.
We need facts so that we can understand, act logically, and achieve the best possible results of action. It is sad that the CCP and WHO seem incapable of understanding this simple truth. When governments lie, their people die.

Did you hear about how some say the China government is burning the dead bodies and that a bunch of sulfur dioxide is being released into the atmosphere? Well, that is a rumor. I've not confirmed this yet.
I have heard that rumor and posts on /pol/ providing evidence. I would not consider it surprising, or even alarming, that cremation is ongoing in China at an accelerated pace. China is presently facing not only nCoV, but two different strains of bird flu, and potential resurgence of endemic plague that may opportunistically eventuate due to the challenges the medical system is facing and the social disruption that exacerbates conditions favoring plague.

The CCP has effectively placed quarantine in necessary areas to stem the spread of the epidemic. It seems that those who are spreading disinformation are those who purport freedom of information, or so-called whistle-blowers, that conjure-up nonsense from the virus being a bioweapon to people dying on the streets. The unparalleled surveillance infrastructure within China has allowed for tracking and detainment of virtually all potential carriers of the disease. The self-proclaimed truth-seekers are the only ones who exacerbate already chaotic and difficult situation by spreading fear and panic with their myopic perspective and ignorant assumptions. Censorship of potentially harmful information, especially during socially unstable circumstances, is rational governance, not some spooky paranoid conspiracy by cartoon evil-doers.

There is no reason to trust a Communist government's portrayal of itself to the world at large. There is absolutely no reason to trust the CCP's "Facts" when they are actively prosecuting and intimidating "misinformationists."
China's population is almost 1.5billion and we are to believe that the infection is not numbered in the millions? Absolutely no possible way this is true.
How many Chinese died during SARS in early 2000's? We will never know because China did not even announce the epidemic in their country at the time it occurred.

Looking at the official numbers as of the time I'm writing this, you can see that of the cases in which the disease has run its course, we have 910 total deaths and 3416 total recovered. That gives us 27% fatality rate if those numbers can be believed, which is a far cry from the official narrative that's being pushed. Considering that this disease is as contagious as the common cold, I'm starting to understand why Chinese officials seem to be in a panic state right now and why expatriates are being evacuated to their home countries and placed under mandatory quarantine upon arrival. 2% would be nothing to sneeze at, but fatality in over a quarter of patients is another matter altogether. Now it may not be quite as bad as it seems because the deaths numbers would accumulate before the recovered numbers and amplify the perceived death rate, but the fatality rate certainly doesn't look anywhere near as low as the claims from officials.
all these official numbers are skewed by the idiosyncratic way China records it's deaths and causes of death as well as the usual propaganda & truth distortion that one would expect from a Communist empire.
It is good you note this, because that is very true. It takes longer to survive than it does to die, and this skews stats.
Presently, due to the chaotic conditions of the epidemic, it is impossible to derive accurate figures for any metric regarding nCoV in China. The data provided by official CCP sanctioned sources is impossibly smooth and appears to be a deliberate attempt to project the ~2% mortality rate.
