The film, set against the background of the dacoits, is inspired by a revenge story that begins in the village of Ramgarh. In Ramgarh, the bandits often come and loot and kill people. Thakur (Sanjeev Kumar) of this village had a laughing family. Sanjeev Kumar is a brave police spectator with his bravery and arrests the robber's chief Gabbar Singh. Later Gabbar Singh somehow escapes from the prison and attacks Ramgarh for revenge. He was happy with his family but lost his family due to the animosity of Gabbar Singh. In order to take revenge, Gabbar Singh kills his entire family, even cutting both the hands of Thakur, the helpless Sanjeev Kumar is living his life. It is only then that two young men Jai (Amitabh Bachchan) Veeru (Dharmendra) enter the village.

Beru goes insane and takes revenge on Gabbar alone towards the forest where Gabbar fires between his comrades and heroes for a long time. Veeru grabs Gabbar and wants to kill him but then Thakur reaches there and says that you promised to bring it alive to me. Veeru remembers the promises he made to his friend and hands Gabbar Singh to Thakur. Thakur kills Gabbar Singh by crushing him with a nail on his foot. Once again there is an atmosphere of peace in Ramgarh. People sing songs with joy.
