Drama Review: Somehow 18

in #aaa5 years ago

Somehow 18 is a time travelling, mini web series starring singer/actor Choi Min Ho and actress Lee Yu Bi. Being two episodes long, this web drama is about a guy named Oh Kyung Hwi who works as a resident doctor in a hospital. He came across a patient who is a young student and she attempted suicide but failed. The student reminded him of the times with a girl back when he was in high school.

Oh Kyung Hwi, the 'loser' of the school, had once attempted suicide as he was constantly bullied at school. Han Na Bi, a new girl who transferred to his school prevented him from committing suicide however she herself committed suicide days later. Unable to forget her, Oh Kyung Hwi still thinks and talks about Han Na Bi ten years later and wonders what had caused her to take her life.

Waking up one day, Oh Kyung Hwi has gone back 10 years in time to a week before Han Na Bi suicides. Wanting to save her, he does everything he could to befriend and support her and also find out what happened to Han Na Bi. Being the mature 28 year old inside of his 18 year old self, he makes changes to his bullied life and he ends up showing Han Na Bi the positive light to life and saves her. Though saving her, he himself got into an accident and went into a coma for 10 years. 10 years later, Han Na Bi became a doctor and she met the suicidal student Oh Kyung Hwi met in the beginning of the drama.

This mini web series played out very well. It was very positive and meaningful about treasuring your own life and having something to fight and live for. Although I may be wrong, but I felt like the ending where Oh Kyung Hwi goes into a coma for 10 years was in exchange for going back 10 years to save Han Na Bi. It was also because exactly 10 years later, Oh Kyung Hwi woke up.

Being only 2 episodes, it was perfect as the story did not drag out and have any unnecessary fillings and happenings. It was straight forward and the message was direct. There were also no space or plot holes that were unexplained which was good. I strongly believe they touched and handled sensitive topics of bullying and suicide very well by inserting positive and optimistic messages and teaching people how to stand up for yourself as well.
