About two hours ago the number of my followers increased to 1,000 for the first time. What does that mean? It simply means that 1,000 accounts get my posts in their feeds. Some people have been saying that the number of followers one has is meaningless. I tend to agree that too much has sometimes been made out of the number of one's followers but it's not a meaningless number. While the exact number does not mean much particularly because most of us only interact with a small subset of our followers many of whom are bots or accounts that have been completely inactive for months, I do think that the order of magnitude makes a difference. It's a very different thing to have 10,000 followers to have 100 or even 1,000.
So, while this is not a huge milestone, it is something to be happy about nonetheless. When I started blogging regularly on Steem in June 2017, my follower count quickly increased to about 150. I remember it staying at about 170 until last November when I ramped up my activities on Steem considerably and when @gamer00 delegated 500 SP to me which he later increased to 1,000. I then started racking up new followers at a rate of 3-5 per day and achieved 500 in March. The next 500 followers took me a little shorter than five months to achieve. The rate of growth slowed down to a trickle in May and hasn't really picked up. Unless the price of STEEM starts going up rapidly again or unless I change something in how I blog, I have little reason to expect my follower count to approach 10,000 anytime soon.
Financially and socially, it would be smart to focus on the quality of interaction. Some people say hanging out on Discord or chat would pay off. Maybe. I just don't have the time to put in that much time in being active on social media. I am a quite active commentator and manual curator. A few weeks ago there was a list of 200 of the most influential manual curators published. I made it to the list despite only having about 1,600 SP. Recently, a list of top 100 human commentators in 2018 (non-spammers) was published. I was 82nd on that list by the number of characters written in comments. That will be enough.

I could buy myself into 2000 SP right now if I wanted to. I'm not going to celebrate SP milestones because they can be bought. Although anyone can dig into the transaction history of any account, I like to maintain even a tiny bit of privacy when it comes to my finances here.
